Sweet! I just saved the server from disaster. /var/cache/apt/archives was full of packages. I ran apt-get clean. /var now has 314M free.

apt-get clean is a useful tool, it ought to have a "cleanup" button on the Add/Remove Gui or in Synaptic pks manager.
