My usual tactic is to make a joke to lighten the mood. He walked up, shook the bag in my face & barked nastily, "You, do you speak English?"

I replied in a perfectly even tone: "No, I am sorry, I do not speak English". He looked confused for a moment, then said: "That was English"

I replied: "I can see where you might be confused, I only know how to say 'I don't speak English' in English". He looked even more puzzled,

& said: "That was English, too". Quoth I: "You must have the dubbed version, are there little words in front of me?" He stomped off shouting

"Fu@#ing foreigners"

Oh wow! He wins the prize.
