never heard Scientists being called boffins before, let alone by the British, but I do love the word.

while I lived in Britain played a game on a Basic Acorn computer in early 1980s - when I was 12 - called "Boffin"

it scrolled up / down instead of left / right; i recently found out that was thought revolutionary at the time.
