We are in the process of making our place less hospitable to snakes.

haha, I need to get a king snake...apparently they are predators of copperheads...and chickens!

Why not just get a shotgun and load it with shotgun ammo?
Rodplurk

Snakes do like to live under rocks though, or at least rattlers do.

I am thinking about a 20 gauge mossberg 500...something the mrs. could handle okay.

the key is to use small rocks and put landscape liner beneath...they can't get in the ground..makes them not like

I'm not really convinced a shotgun is a great idea for snake hunting.
superkash

not really hunting, as much as killing them when they are sititng by the house. I can't shoot a rifle out here...neighbors.

Rifle is clearly the wrong option, you cant consistently hit a snake with one, you will still have trouble with a shotgun I think.
Fordprefect
Clearly you can hit it, but it will be hard to actually kill one, I would go with a 12 gauge over a 20, you could use much large shot

without losing spread

how about a really big shovel? Slap him once, and then straight for the head!
Bibble

btw, those directions can be applied to more than just attacking a snake with a shovel (griltongue)
superkash

hmmm...might be right 12 vs 20. Shovel works fine...but you can get uncomfortably close.

you have to be quick... my dad gave me a shovel to get a small, brown garter snake out of our backyard... i asked, "So do I kill it?"
Bibble

he then took the shovel out of my hand, scooped up the snake, and carried it out to the desert/dirt area behind our house
Bibble

and then HE KILLED IT!!1 no, just kidding, he let it go

my friends in mexico kill snakes with their 'cactus burner' which is a small flamethrower used to burn needles off cacti for the pigs to eat

Are they legal in the states?
Bibble

if you can shoot at snakes with a 12 gauge in your backyard, why couldn't you own a mini-flamethrower?

Mossberg makes a fine and afforadable shotgun. Having bagged more than a few rattlers, choke is almost irrelevant as you almost always...

I was thinking a 18.5 inch mossberg 500 12 gauge. could be fun for clay pigeons as well :-)
Fordprefect

damn, 18.5 inch, thats like a home defense/tactical barrel. You will look like a total badass with that thing. That barrel will suck balls
Fordprefect

for shooting clays though.
Fordprefect

I use a Remington 870 with a 28" barrel. Thats way overkill for shooting snakes though.

I shoot skeet with an 18.5" coach gun. It's fun because you have to be fast.
