I think a lot of the sodium comes from additives other than NaCl. Lots of preservatives, etc.

an a Burger King burger is made right then (supposedly they say) for me fresh.
used to always order fries without salt because of that and because it forced them to make a fresh, hot batch.

why can they use spices for the "bite" in food - like garlic or onion or curry. Salt (shudder) ick.

salt is supposed to draw out flavor. Since there's not much flavor, it needs alot of salt! :-)

I learned from Rollercoaster Tycoon that if you put extra salt on the fries in your burger booth then people buy more drinks...
