the guy who isn't on a project, so he's handling all the non-project stuff & basically being screwed all the time right now.
So it seemed wrong to delegate half a day of pure shit work to any of them. Esp since it needed to be done more or less immediately.

Yeah, that's why I didn't want to be lower management. All of the grunt work, plus extra responsibility and net cut in pay.
