my life started with hotmail. I have a gmail account. Hardly use it tho, need to transfer my life over if I am gonna start.

there are probably tools out there to help you export your Hotmail mail. You shouldn't have to feel shackled to any particular account.

if Hotmail supports POP3 access? If so, you can indeed use a client to download everything. If not, you'd need a utility to get round it.
