Added a SCSI card, eSATA card, and a tape drive easy as pie. Seriously - all under 30 minutes. Similar on a nix box - one week.
Tape drive...kinda like a colorado tape drive?
wow i rarely saw those! but i know what thay look like. good job!
anywho - i absolutely do not want to lose data when that's almost my ONLY job.
also trying to figure out wtf is goin on with 22k of equipment.
I remember at my uncles office seeing data tape drives
Colorado was a brand od tape drives made by HP.
Working on servers and workstations?
ahh, dell tape drive - dell server...well, dell everything. but yes, servers, workstations, laptops and everything else.
LTO3 i think. Ultrium or something.
good shiz. my dad works w/LTO 4 for a living... that's what i was selling in vegas...
know anything about the specific implimentations?
i basically have 1.8terabites of raid -5, 1tb of raid-1 and 8tb in tapes
his is actually a NAS... it can be used over 100base T/USB/eSata/firewire...
It has a 1Tb drive acting as a cache for the tapes... and the LTO-4 standard carries 800GB so there is some cache space...
you copy the data to the HD which is the network recognized storage... drag and drop in any userface/language...
and you control the device through an HTML interface...
the device is infinitely expandable... and it catalogues any tape it has ever seen/written... and the contents of it...
plus, they tag the location of each data piece in their catalogue... so you can random access basically anything you queue up...
it's a frickin amazing device...
and you can rack mount and they data share, etc...
nice - why lto4 though - did they need the encryption? lto3's are supposed to last longer. is there a site for this magic box?
transfer rates and competition... i'm not familiar w/longevity regarding 3/4 technology... but the industry is moving to 5
their target market is actually audio/video right now... and post-production crews... new units are going to be BEASTS...
dual tape writing... raid 5 with hot swappable drives for speed editing on site...
they're missing driver downloads on their site!
also - what's one of these cost?
btw- there's totally a larger market this could be for
they don't need driver downloads... the unit is self contained... it updates itself... it also has a mini itx card so it's basically a comp.
they know... they're just focusing on the industry they know
you can use it as network attached... straight to pc... or hook up monitor/kb...
im thinking something like this could be wicked for like the medical industry - maybe modified some, but similar
and it's 8k for the basic unit, 9500 for the one w/the faster inputs...
and they've been movin... not massive... but respectable
yeah you know... i actually spent a lot of time talking to different industries...
boeing was really interested...
frig, way cheaper than this aberdeen unit we were gonna get.
start with what you know and grow from there ;p
what im wanting to find is a self contained hybrid unit
you could build one yourself ;p
haha, pretty muc hwhat im doing now. annoying.
their main selling point is their interface
otherwise it's basically like 2500 in parts...
just after the whole sales line... you've gotta raise the prise exponentially to make a profit
what i'd like to see is something similar to this maybe, but expanded - a large sata raid multiple drive bay with a few more slots for tapes
so use the tapes for say - monthly archival
hardisks for immediate and schedule backups
the trick and selling point again- the interface
if it could automate all this or have it easily configurable from the web that'd be sweet
this is entirely possible with their hardware... they have rack mountable units... and they're already programmed to communicate
they also can do scheduled backups of any network mounted drives/folders...
8k is a bit steep for the capabilities for what im talking though
when i last talked to him they were doing data checking w/md5 so that you could do incremental backups
rather if it DID have all those slots and stuff it would be ok
but as it is vs what im asking for it's a bit high
unfortunately i don't even know if i can get it cheaper ;p
aye - weekly fulls, daily incrementals, monthly full archives
but yeah that's why the interface is their selling point...
hehe, gov budget is frozen for 3 months atm.
most solutions just use symantec + their drive... which works, but it's a really arduous process...
actually - what'd win me is backup file management
if you do incremental that shit clutters FAST
cant stand anything symantec makes really
yeah i'm not a fan of anything they produce... most bloated software around.. i'm not familiar w/that... i'm such a newbie in this stuff
i really only know their product ;p
hehehe, why am i not working with this man right now?
i can't even work with him dude... it's a 4 man company
they talked to me about writing tech journals for them... but that went quiet... so who knows, eh
fine, we shoud start our own competing company....TO DRIVE UP PRICES!
hahaha get those programming classes under your belt... and ... maybe.... not really...
anyway i'm off work so i'm heading home
hah, im actually working on something - i finsihed my php class - you saw the post.
the database is already built for it and already have clients interested
just a matter of finding time and drive to kick this thing out
and why dont have i have your # anymore@!?!
