i see. maybe a cultural thing? dunno, i know it was frowned upon to not have a governess for education but do you mean socially speaking?

I noticed that too. Even though society women weren't as involved as they are today, mothers wouldn't have given their daughters free reign

like Daisy has here. I think Faulkner and James both use absent or poor parents as a way to explain in part the behavior of the children.

ooh yeah. definitely agree. i wish we had someone of daisy's age with a "right" mother to compare to. you know? i mean we get some of that..
