my arm and wrist are already pretty flat, but there's a small gap under my wrist, between it and the mousepad.

As far as I see, your forearm and hand have to be on the same horizontal surface, the top of the mouse being at the wrist's bottom side.

No, I never saw a benefit or not of this position. Using myself a computer days long without and having no issue.

However I'm not moving my wrist when moving the mouse left-right or up-down, but the whole forearm. And handing the mouse with the fingers..
