how did Tommie and Maggie die? The author doesn't tell us, kind of a bad way to end it, I think

Babies died all the time back in those days. The first thought that came to mind was the flu possibly, even though it doens't hint at it...

...anyway I think Tommie was the lucky one because he didn't have to grow up in the hell the other ones did.
