if there is a formula for converting pixels to inches?
latest #34
AmberCadabra

depends on the screen resolution.
ThoughtWrong
says

well, screen resolution is in regards to pixels right? like 1024.768 is measured in pixels. So if I have a site that stays at 1024 width
AmberCadabra
for instance, at web resolution, it's usually 72 pixels per inch

I am curious what in inches that would be so I can draw a header for it on paper
ThoughtWrong

72 per inch, cool so 1024 width would be about 14.25 inches

Most LCD monitors are capable of 75 DPI. A dot in this respect is equal to a pixel so you can get 75 pixels per inch.

All things being equal, that'd be about 14.25 in
AmberCadabra
yep
AZJazzyJ
says
print is typically either 240DPIor 300DPI so for that medium the factor would be 300 to 1
AmberCadabra
but there's just not hard/fast conversion because different monitors display differently.
AmberCadabra
but if I'm laying something out in Illustrator and tell it I need it to be 1024 pixels wide, it gives me a 14.25" artboard.

OHH BECAUSE OF dpi i SEE
ThoughtWrong

damn caps
AmberCadabra
yep, exactly
AmberCadabra
so at HD resolution, you can have 1000+ pixels per inch, hence the refined resolution
AmberCadabra
so 1024 pixels in THAT case would be about 1".
ThoughtWrong
says
ok so if I am drawing on regular paper a full size header then I would want to draw it at about 14 inches in order to get it the same size..
AZJazzyJ
says

this assumes square pixels which is right for monitor or print but pixels are not square for video so it depends.

..in PS when I scan it
AmberCadabra

I think that would be a safe play, yes.

Jeff, right. I think in print terms.

all things being relative, just use a bigger canvas than you need. always able to downsize, upsizing is the hard part
ThoughtWrong
says

there shouldn't be since pixels aren't a standard distance... different screen's show pixels at different sizes depending on the res and
ForgeAus
says

the size of the actual screen itself
