So many exploits are done through open source viewers. I'm not sure LL could even control it if they wanted to anymore.
It is better to try then to not though
yes they have to try, but doing the wrong thing will ruin it for a lot of innocent people and not make any difference to the problem.
eg. if viewers have to be registered, I can't connect any more, but the dodgy viewers will just pretend to be legit ones.
if they have to be vetted to connect to the grid then I am all for it it would remove the ability for idiots to just point and click
and if they look thru the code there will not be a way for the bad viewers to pretend
problem is the bad ones will just pretend to be a registered one. There's no way LL can tell which you're running.
thats just it they need to figure out a way so that ONLY vetted clients can connect maybe not give the connect code except afterwards
ect something needs to be done if you have better suggestions I am all for hearing them but this can not continue the way it is
There is no practical way for them to tell. Anything a legit viewer does, a bad one can watch and imitate.
I think the only approach is in things like not allowing unregistered accounts to transfer things, etc.
The recording industry has completely failed to stop people copying music and they have hundreds of times the resources of LL.
but doing something is better then sitting back and saying oh well
I know it will be there but lets stop making it so damn easy that every idiot can do it
sure, but doing things that make no difference to the problem but ruin it for others is worse.
requiring registration before you get transfer permission. Checking uploads to make sure they don't match existing content.
are things that aren't too hard and would help a lot
I would take away all 3rd party viewers in a heart beat and I use them if it meant less content theft
I'm 100% certain it would make no difference to content theft, and it would chase off a lot of legit people.
