Only learning Photoshop in design school is like teaching an architect to use a hammer instead of why the wall is there in the first place.

so very true! doing tutorials from the book and turning it in for the A is a step in the wrong direction
The basic principles of design start with the older tools ..paper, pencil, drawing table, french curves, protractors, compasses.
Learning to use photoshop, autocad, illustrator, gimp .. all of those are software tools that are by nature non-intuitive.
Pardon the rant, but even though we live in a digital age ... those skills still have to be taught and practiced.
Or in the worse case, relearned.
