Gladiator 神鬼戰士（2000）

Gladiator這個片名起得非常好，因為它正是電影的最佳註解。Maximus的執劍者形象強而有力，儼然成為了抗爭的代名詞。這部電影所試圖要傳達的價值就在於此——裡頭的英雄不能僅僅只是一個打勝仗的將軍，他必須是一個真正的戰士。他必須為了獲得自由而戰鬥，也必須為了自己所捍衛的事物受盡磨難，至死方休。

至於如何死去、如何被銘記也是本片的另一個命題。如同先皇帝在死前的慨嘆”How will the world speak my name in years to come“，Maximus又何嘗不是為了死得其所而拚命戰鬥？
在那個人命並不值錢的時代，死亡是輕易的，於是人們不得不去尋求kleos，尋求強大到能夠抵禦死亡的永恆榮耀。這點跟希臘神話十分相似，因此比起歷史故事，《神鬼戰士》所描摹的英雄性反而有著更多神話色彩，是個十分有趣的手法。

“The beating heart of Rome is not the marble of the Senate, it's the sand of the Colosseum. He’ll bring them death and they will love him for it.”

“Ultimately, we’re all dead men. Sadly, we cannot choose how but, what we can decide is how we meet that end, in order that we are remembered, as men.”
