this is a really interesting post because it combines things i feel strongly about (the persona series & the fallout series) and manages to have the worst takes imaginable on both counts.

including the mass hysteria that deluded people into thinking persona 4 was better than persona 5 lmao. or better than persona 3 even???? lmao????

i haven't gotten the chance to play P5, but as fun as P4 thanks to some improved gameplay, it tbh is a downgrade to P3 especially after P3P came out

^in terms of story, it's a downgrade

like P4 is probably the most accessible, i'd give it that. but when you compare what comes before and, from the reception i've seen, what came after it's just decent but nothing to write home about

side note though i'll literally fight people saying P2 IS/EP is just 'decent' or boiling it down to nazis

i haven't played P2 yet (it's on my list of games to get through this year) but tbh i found P4's dungeons a lot more frustrating than P3's even though on a lot of levels they were probably an improvement? beyond that, the core gameplay loop is pretty much the same. i guess with the original P3 having AI controlled party members, that would also be a factor

but i've only played P3P.

vanilla P3 had dated AI but I heard the AI was worse in P3P (didn't used it, quickly switched to direct control) probably the worse of it was how easy it was to reverse or broke S.Links, iirc all the romantic options can't be platonic so you're forced to navigate your s.links more so you wouldn't be accused of cheating

but yeah reducing P2 to "nazis" is so. wild. wild to do that. it's also not even true on the other end of the chart. fallout 2 doesn't have nazis, it has a fascist army built out of the remnants of the american government.

but it was mostly improved in the FES version, I think. But either way, a lot of is gone by P3P and also had more additional content that gives more depth so I argue it mostly outweighs the old gameplay esp now that reload is out
I guess the big improvements are both social links for all your party members (and their personas evolve based on your involvement) and controllable party members, but...
Persona 3 is still so much better story wise??

the funniest thing is that, like fallout 2, P2's nazis weren't even real either. at best you have fascists wannabes and doppelgangers, but not the actual real thing

controllable party members can hardly be called an improvement considering the AI controlled party members was a new thing in persona 3, but yeah that's true i suppose. also i guess a lot of the social links for minato kind of suck, while P4 does have some pretty good ones. that's about all i can say in terms of writing improvements.

there's also the shadows correlating to certain individuals and the weird personalized cognitive worlds that would get massively expanded in p5. but i'm pretty eh on how that was used in p4 even if i like it a lot in theory.

also yeah the nazis in Persona 2 are like, the personification of the conspiracy theory that hitler faked his death right?

Yeah, that's fair, the AI party members thing was them trying something new that didn't quite hit and never tried again (P1 and P2 ports had auto battle option but that's as far as they go)

Also yeah P2's nazis were born from rumors that Hitler and the last battalion faked his death, but it doesn't happen like until way later
