I remember in the 90’s I was at a friend’s house and put a bowl of soup in the microwave, not realizing that the fancy ceramic bowl had a metallic rim. I vividly remember the sparks whizzing around the edge before I hit the shutoff switch.

Likewise, as a child (again in the 90’s), I went to put an Arby’s sandwhich in the microwave to reheat, forgetting that their sandwich wrappers, for some damn reason, are paper on one side and foil on the other. The paper caught fire. It was very traumatic.

It does make me wonder if modern microwaves have some sort of safety in them that they didn’t have 30 years ago?

I still wouldn’t risk it. Particularly with foil

A woman in college put her burrito in the microwave wrapper and all and caused a MASSIVE series of sparks. And kept trying to keep microwaving it as it was despite everyone yelling at her to take the wrapper off
friend just set her's on fire with foil today so

In that video it seems like the one thing that did consistently catch on fire was foil
