I'm signing up for some of the pre-req classes tomorrow
Again, really kind of annoyed/thankful the only difference between my major and an English major is 14 credits.
I'll be trying to take 3 classes at a time. Mostly because of the literature classes having such immense book requirements and I'm bad at reading
Well, I'm not bad I'm just easily bored and it's hard to stay focused on words unless I'm really into it. I have to re-read a lot so reading takes me ages
So the plan is, 1 literature, 1 math (not a requirement but I need help lol) and 1 something else (linguistics or presentation)
The linguistics class is through a uni so I need to sort of apply to the uni to get access to their course
It will take time, maybe a month? So hopefully I can do what I need in time for a late start
ALL of these things are online so the uni class has rolling start dates but everything else is start and stop when it pleases you
I was planning to start all of this 2 weeks ago but then Merrill got sick and my plans kinda went ??? because saving a cats life via surgery and medical expenses isn't cheap
But I think I've sorted out funds I'll need to at least get pre-reqs underway. I'll figure other things out as I go
I got 4 of the 5 classes set up, but need to wait for admissions for the 5th
Also scheduled another advisor appointment update just to give them something like an academic plan on timeline
I wanted to get the Master's started by June but realistically with course lengths and with how long transferring credits might take, it's probably more likely to be August/September
WHICH IS FINE but just a little slower than I had hoped
So I signed up for that 5th class just before midnight last night but only got access to the online course content this morning. Which is fair! But it's one of those classes that had a quiz on the first day so I already missed it lmao
Emailing the professor and waiting to see if I can do it anyway
This isn't really study related. My advisor for the MEd and I had a phone call today. She's having a baby by Sunday (inducing) so she's going to be away until July. So we were coordinating if I need a new advisor and how to do that
We went back and forth with options and after I explained my learning goal timeline (start the MEd by September hopefully) she was like "Okay, well. Since I'm back in July. Can I just keep you?" LOL
We get along well enough that it's more casual conversation than academic oversight. Imagine being an adult lol And I think she gets a commission if I successfully register into the program
So unless something goes horribly wrong and you never know. It was basically concluded that I'll just be sticking with her and if I desperately need to update then I can do an appointment with anyone else and just have my file updated through them
Sheesh though, I didn't realize how little maternal leave the US gives. She said it's 12 weeks but the uni is generous giving 18 weeks
I mean, China would ask you to quit your job. My company was "generous" and gave 6 months because 70% of the company were women (except anyone at the top LOL)
Not really a lol pls understand the sarcasm
Anyway. Week 2 of linguistics class. Phonetics and IPA is the thing. I know IPA in passing from the cert TESOL. Can I write it by heart? No. I actually found my accent gets in the way a lot which is weird because DC accents are mostly neutral
So I'll blame my family for that one, thanks Philly
I'll be starting 101 English. So Ancient - Modern British literature
We begin with KNIGHTS CANTEBURRY spelling??
Library has failed me for this so we may need to order online. I want a physical book, alas
The assignment I turned in last Wednesday still hasn't been graded for linguistics
Which makes me horribly nervous about doing this week's assignment because I was hoping to use last week's as a basis of expectations from the prof
Like, I answered the question, but I could have said more and chose not to because I answered the question and the rest would be flaunting larger theories
So I am nervous because. Is this a professor that states exactly what they want or is what they want a C average and only if you add beyond what's asked are you worthy of an A
I have had too many bad experiences as a student with this dilemma but it gets okay after I understand their expectations. It's just extremely frustrating when it is blatantly written down. You'd think a syllabus covers it, but it never does
Also, back to the advisor meeting. I mentioned I'm taking the linguistics and literature together and she was very much like OH NO please don't burn out. Most do it one at a time
And I'm like

but that would take months
She was genuinely concerned though
So I foolishly said "I am a professional student, never fear" and mentioned my bat shit 18 credit freshmen year and over piling courses almost all through uni so I could study abroad in time and she kind of relented
Or maybe just came to the conclusion I'm insane
But linguistics is
timed with like real deadlines and the other courses are "for as long as you can pay the sub fee". Using
https://study.com btw if any are curious
But I am doing so because they need to be transferrable credits. Unfortunately study doesn't have linguistics so that's why it's a separate and timed course from another uni
