so osomatsu-san is like, a reboot+sequel to osomatsu-kun, which was a manga/anime in the 60s that then got an earlier anime remake in the 80s

-kun was more straightforward but -san is like. more of a variety show, sometimes an episode will be just one or two narratives, other times it'll be a bunch of little short gags

it is meta as fuck sometimes, especially in the season premieres but also in a lot of other cases, some minor and some big ones like the whole iyami kart episode that was just everyone competing to be the protagonist of the anime

it's extremely hard to figure out how canon you should consider any particular event in a lot of cases, which i attempted to do with my memshare list which just ended up with

honestly the first time i played him in 2016 when there was only the one season i just ignored most of this stuff and played it as if only the top three levels existed and didn't acknowledge the rest, because i didn't want to deal with having to decide which things actually happened

but all the other people who played them in games after that always went all in on the meta thing and the anime definitely went harder on it in later seasons too where they straight up mention how many times they died in a season during a normal conversation and stuff so i was like well i guess i'm doing this

so i was always "uhhh" about like, whether to present things as them dressing up in costumes and just acting out some of the comedy segments where they play other characters or if they saw it in their universe as literally being drawn differently

anyway!!! it's a lot!!!! and while a lot of episodes about their daily lives are very mundane there is sooooo much crazy shit that happens

the fact that they die in a lot of these segments and then come back fine for the next one ended up being a huge thing in a murdergame for... obvious reasons...

people would joke in chat before game start about the idea of him being a murderer and i was like, well, he did shoot up his entire family once and everyone was killing each other in the iyami kart ep, like. lmao

there is also just some VERY DARK AND FUCKED UP SLAPSTICK HUMOR that's just presented as comedy in context that he was therefore very blasé about but like. if you actually try to describe it. it is fucked up as hell???

i forced one of these on andie because no one made him strip during trial on the rusty wound week

i just gave him the stupidest most fucked up injuries possible for that, one of them was actually just. his ass from being sodomized by a giant flagpole but that was never going to come up ghjkfdhajlfk

but the other one that was why he was wearing black shirts all week was... his nipples... because of this episode where their mom was threatening all of them and cutting off their nipples with a butcher knife when they weren't answering their parents' questions satisfactorily

and when it got to him after watching 4 out of his other 5 brothers spurting blood he was just like "fuck this shit completely actually" and fucking tore off his own instead of letting someone do it to him

which, they were back in the next episode segment, because of course they were, nothing is permanent

but anyway THAT WAS IMMENSELY FUCKED UP and he was just like lmao yeah that was messed up i was really pissed about it

but not like... remotely traumatized by it...

so any time people treated him like an innocent kid that needed to be protected i was like, well,

that is kind of the image he chooses to project because he likes being cute and likes not being in danger and not having to do hard work, so if he can manipulate people into wanting to protect and do shit for him by playing up the cute and innocent thing that's great, but,

anyway imo he is by far the most complicated character in the show

and there's a lot about him that seems really contradictory

he's the most manipulative one, the one who's the most competent in normal social situations who actually has a social circle outside of his family, he's the independent one who actually managed to go out and get a job on his own, and he had things he did on his own, like climbing mountains and going to the gym and joining a go club

he goes to mixers and knows girls and can talk to them like a reasonable human being

he's also like, the coldest and most callous in a lot of ways, like he pretends not to know his family if he sees them in public and is fine with almost murdering them if they're causing trouble for him, and he's the only one who refers to the AI bots as machines and tools instead of treating them like people

sometimes he's two-faced about it and other times he's just a straight up asshole

his username "dry monster" is what his brothers refer to him as because they don't think he has real feelings and that he's basically just a sociopath

and like, as everyone gets flanderized more over the course of the show, that's his trait that they drill down on a lot (like in this ep where you see everyone's organs he's literally missing a heart)

but AT THE SAME TIME

he's also the most sensitive one, like, there are multiple occasions where he cries for real in situations where faking it wouldn't make any sense or help him any, like when choromatsu is moving out and when their dad's in the hospital

the hospital thing ESPECIALLY because he's the one who stays huddled up against the wall by their dad's bed after everyone else gets up to go

this is here like a minute in since i made a clip for memshare

and despite being the most independent and competent one most of the time he's also the one who's scared of getting up and going to the bathroom in the middle of the night and has to wake up one of his brothers to go with him

and rather than sleeping in their birth order which would put him at the end of the futon he's in the middle and there's a note in one of the little supplemental books about how he's in between everyone because he gets lonely by himself

during the brief time where he tries moving out and living on his own he's just totally suffering being in a room alone in the dark

and he also just like, really hates people being rude and inconsiderate to ANYONE, not just him

this (cw for some weird cartoony body horror) is one of my favorite scenes of him because when choro's going on about how the only choice a loser like him has is to become a dayon totty's like "ok well first off that's not your only choice, but also that was rude to the dayons"

there's this one bit where ichimatsu's doing this weird fake radio show and totty's like, secondhand embarrassed by seeing him acting out all this shit but he also gets offended on behalf of the imaginary staff he's inconveniencing at one point

and when oso's being a moody dick and refuses to see choro off when he moves out, totty goes upstairs afterward and whacks him with a rolled up newspaper for being a selfish asshole and predictably gets a black eye for it

so despite supposedly being the heartless monster he's actually the most conscious of other people's feelings and the most willing to stand up against people who are acting out of line

this manifested toward the end of the game in him being like "i don't give a shit about saving these rats" but then also helping go out and buy more food for them just because he was offended by how rude lucien was for dumping their food on the ground lmao

one thing that started coming up a lot at the end of the game is just how, like... depressing their lives actually are

and canon reviewing the whole show all at once it was a lot more obvious how like, worn down they seem by the third season compared to the first

early on todomatsu had all that stuff he was doing for himself! his job and his mountain climbing and his go club and everything! but he doesn't seem to do any of that stuff anymore and rather than keep trying to move up in society he's just kind of fallen in with all the rest of them in being like "actually why even fucking bother, let's stay neets"

but he's still image conscious and self aware enough to realize that makes him fucking trash and that he should be doing more

so he feels bad about not doing anything worthwhile but not bad enough to actually push him to do anything about it

which is like

so... relatable... lmfao

it's just like oh that is just Depression

but at the same time it's like. he enjoys having all this free time to just play pachinko or watch porn or whatever and sometimes life is fun! he doesn't want to die or anything

they're just very very stagnant

the last episode of the show at this point (the end of the 3rd season) i actually really love because in contrast to the previous two seasons that went super dramatic before swerving to over to the top crazy, it's just

so mundane

they're just bored and all the places they usually go to are closed so they're just standing around like

man... i kind of want to do something... but also i kind of don't

they make plans to go gather snacks and stuff individually and then meet up for a cherry blossom viewing picnic

and in the end they don't even do that, they all just meet each other at the bathhouse and it's like, oh, none of us actually went

it ends on the upbeat note of "well we have plenty of time so we can just do it another day!" but also it's like

you know they won't

anyway that was coming up a lot at the very end of the game, like... from like w3 to w6 he was actually working really hard to gather info and solve cases and do whatever he could to get everyone back and everything

and then everyone WAS back and then powers were back and he was one of the only normies there so suddenly he was just like oh i have nothing to contribute anymore i guess. ok.

and he was just sinking into depression really badly at the end and is already like "well i know i'm just going to go right back to being a shitty NEET and doing nothing with my life as soon as i get back"

which he's just going to feel shittier about now because he DID work so hard for a while

anyway focusing on game stuff now and going back to the beginning

he was definitely like "well this is all shady as hell" at the beginning of everything but wasn't that concerned about it because, well, crazy shit happens in his world all the time and the only thing that really seemed THAT weird was the fact that he didn't recognize the rest of the cast here (whereas usually it's always people from his neighborhood)

the pay seemed great and the job didn't sound THAT bad so he was like eh i can suffer through this for 8 weeks if there's a chance i actually come out of this with that much money, it's less than one cour and i'd probably never have to work again

dahut was a very pleasant roommate and he met a couple of people that he got along with fine on a shallow level, and like, that's what he's good at, he's good at having a wide circle of acquaintances that he has very shallow relationships with

so he was like yeah this is fine these are coworkers so i'll just try to get along with them

but then he kept getting humiliated by thoughtshare and the party and he wasn't loving it lmao

but dahut was really nice to him and took care of him so he was like, the one person he actually felt kind of attached to even if there were a few others he liked talking to well enough

and he was just very glad to have a nice roommate because he gets really scared and depressed by himself

so lmao!!!!

dahut being one of the first deaths w0 was! so bad! for multiple reasons!

and just the nature of it was like-- if murder had been part of the ic premise from the beginning like it was in homo or suite dreams that would have been one thing, he would have just been like, ok, that's the kind of genre this is going to be, and would have figured it was just some killing game that everyone would come back from at the end

and he would have been his usual callous self and killed someone to get ahead and really not cared

WHICH WAS WHAT I WAS EXPECTING TO PLAY TBH

instead the whole thing felt totally out of left field and like it wasn't supposed to happen, with the unannounced lockdown and the failed overrides and everything and he just kind of panicked at that

most of the rest of his curfew (BATHROOM CURFEW!!!!) was a lot calmer and being with them kept him from totally losing his shit, like they eventually went off on this whole line of conversation about how they needed to complain to management and how they deserved a spa instead of these shitty showers, and it lightened the mood a lot

and i will just take a moment here to say how unexpectedly precious that group ended up being to him

like, they never all curfewed together again and yet

just having all of them there that night instead of being alone was very important, and it especially helped that it was five guys and shouxue so it really was kind of like being in there with his brothers (featuring totoko) and that also helped a lot

he ended up being really fond of sidon after that because he'd kept spirits up and just been really reassuring

when he and sidon played oregon trail later they named their party after the bathroom crew... it was them and owner and eunhyuk and viktor on the wagon and the oxen were diluc

they did not subject shouxue to being trapped on a wagon with them or being an ox

but anyway. it was cute. and then THAT ENTIRE GROUP EXCEPT FOR HIM SLOWLY GOT PICKED OFF AND HE WAS THE LAST ONE STANDING AND IT WAS UPSETTING

when everyone got revived it was one of his first priorities to get that group back together so he texted everyone to be like HEY WE'RE HAVING A SPA PARTY LIKE WE ALWAYS WANTED, COME OR I'LL BE VERY ANGRY

and then they had this whole party and it was just so wholesome and fun and i loved it

everyone doing each other's nails and everything... aah

anyway, ends bathroom tangent

finding out dahut was dead the next morning was fucking awful! he was the only person he'd felt close to at all before that night and he knew from experience how much he can't stand being in a room by himself at night, and because like-- back home they'd all died a bunch of times, but it was always for comedy, so they had like, this protection

where nothing really mattered that much because as long as it was for comedy no one would ever stay dead

which isn't to say no one EVER dies, like, they would not have been nearly as upset about their dad's heart attack if that was the case, but that was the second to last episode of that season

when actual serious things happen that have the potential to bring permanent change, that's always later in the season and the mood is very obviously not comedic

but here this was happening in w0 -- which in his mind was episode 1 of an 8 episode miniseries

and the circumstances surrounding it were just scary and sad and upsetting so it was very much not a comedic death

and he was struggling to wrap his head around what that meant, because it seemed like suddenly this thing he only had to worry about in rare late-game situations was something he'd have to worry about already

so that meant everyone around him could die, he could die, and there was a good chance that they wouldn't be able to just come back the next week

finding out that scien had killed dahut also fucked him up a little because dahut had talked about him like they were family and it just reminded him of how he'd killed his own family before and how angry he got at them sometimes and he was just like oh actually i totally understand how you can be furious enough to kill someone you love/are close to

which ended up being less of a thing when the actual possession mechanics came up, but

on monday they got the strip mall and all his brothers' hoodies were there so he got one of each of them and just threw them around his room haphazardly to make it look like they were living there

he's very neat and tidy so that was always the only mess in his room

and then he finally at least slept again though he avoided spending much time in the room aside from that

help i was trying to remember what happened this week besides the cyoa and murder and then was like OH RIGHT THE VAMPIRE PLANET

he definitely whored his veins out to some vampire girls because this was the only opportunity he'd ever have to get a girl to suck him in any sense of the word

and then used a recovery pod to heal the bites and restore his red blood cells lmao

that was the other wound i had show up on injury week but he just kept those covered up with bandaids or cute scarves

and no one ever asked

his was one of the scheduled mission ones where they knew in advance that they were going and could have told someone and i was like

their thing was an infiltration mission on this plant planet where they were supposed to get this heartseed from this big gala and i had him dress up like a very pretty lady because he's like the go-to sextuplet for playing girl parts in canon and he does it very well

so that was just fun to get to do that there since it wasn't going to happen in any other context

but anyway the event they were at turned out to be this weird execution ceremony where they had these criminals whose punishment was going to be getting turned into these creepy ass tortured tree people, and of course the people who were going to be executed were people from home

and god bless snow for using all five brothers for mine lmfao

but this was another thing that went soooooo much differently than it would have if he hadn't just had the w0 trauma

anyway his main motivation for pulling through that was that if his brothers were actually all dead he could not let his parents lose all six at once, he had to at least go back

and like. the thing was this was w1 and it was the first week of cyoas and we hadn't had any visual hallucinations or anything yet so there was actually very little reason NOT to believe it was actually them

so when he got back from that he was just kind of in a daze and still injured pretty badly and trying to process everything and most of my pcs from that night were in the sim room where he just recreated chibita's oden stand with all his brothers there on the bench with him and just sat there drinking

it was so sad and i loved the atmosphere of that so much!!

talking about each brother and everything he said about them out loud was just harsh and insulting while the brackets had all the things he actually appreciated about them

but anyway temenos also told him that the person from home that he'd seen on that planet was already dead so there actually was reason to believe it was just an illusion somehow, which helped a lot, though he still wasn't SURE and was still fucked up over it for a while

i felt bad about that curfew because rosamund was trying so hard to be nice and supportive and he was just so snappy about it

and very much did not want to talk about it to explain why

so he just like. didn't talk to her again until she texted him next week and he replied all cheerfully like haha sorry i was just having a bad day!!!!!!

because he did just feel like an asshole after that

especially after she had to do the execution that week

so w2 then was mostly him just trying really hard to put all that behind him and act normal

that week was the really nice tea shop curfew with sidon and rosamund and owner where they played party games and just had a fun time!! originally sidon had planned to stay in the armory and totty was like no that sucks let's have cute pastries

the funny thing was that he was still so messed up from the week before and owner was the only one who understood since he'd been on the cyoa with him

so in truth or dare sidon just nicely asked him what his favorite thing to do with his brothers was and he was just like hahahahahahahaha internally while owner was like oof

but aside from that it was a very nice night! and then in the morning sidon was fucking dead!!!!

he was blaming himself pretty hard for that at first since he'd talked him out of the armory and the tea shop was a location in one of the murders (though iirc it was ashe's and not sidon's) and he was just like wow maybe if he'd actually started out in the armory and had weapons to use he wouldn't have died!!!!!! even though that was like.

sidon's a fucking skyscraper i think he could have killed almost anyone without needing weapons

then that trial was just... the biggest fucking oof........... first off he was the one who brought up shouxue's dye near the end of the trial which pretty much clinched that

which wouldn't have been that bad except that we managed to tie and i STILL DON'T KNOW HOW WE DID THAT

so then he was just like wow!!!! maybe if i'd kept my fucking mouth shut we'd only be executing one teenage girl right now instead of two!!!!!!!

oh i guess that was also the trial where he was briefly his hot version which was funny but already felt like five years ago by the end of the trial

i can't overstate how much that was just a normal day for them, like, they just went out and got drunk at the oden stall with bandaids on their nipples immediately afterward and tried to get rich from streaming on youtube

w3 was memshares which like... he didn't have big important ones that would affect plot and shit like simon did, most of his were kind of dumb but there were a few from the second to last episodes of seasons 1 and 2 that were actually emotional and painted him in a more positive or sympathetic light than others

i think the big thing that came out of that was his cr with ichiban lmao they'd hardly done anything together before that

and it was extra infuriating since at that point most of them were aware that the theory was that the people affected by the rage HAD to be executed because it wasn't going to leave as long as they were alive, and he was also! aware of that!

so he was just furious about being pulled into this stupid gambit that would have been absolutely terrible for everyone on the entire ship AND made him look like a DUMBASS!!!!!!!!!

so after the trial he tracked nodd down and lectured him and eventually slapped him and was just like UGH and he was 100% done with him forever

so getting love arrowed to him was soooo bad

like he KNEW that was what it had to be because he HATED THAT GUY way too much to HAVE THE FEELINGS HE WAS FEELING ABOUT HIM and he already had hate arrows on hand so he hate arrowed them together trying to undo the love arrows

which it didn't and instead they just had a weird tsundere thing going for two days

because the hate arrows were obviously used after the love arrows the love ran out first and he was just left with pure hate at the end before curfew lmao

he liked her a lot and they had their fiction bond... and she actually came to his room that friday but we never got far enough in the thread for him to know what was going on there because friday threads are late and hard ghsjkf but that kind of made him feel worse about not picking up on it earlier

that situation was terrible but he would have voted for her if it had been clear earlier that bradley wasn't also affected, he just kind of jumped on that as an excuse NOT to vote for her (which was really easy when you could say "hey they'll even be reunited if he dies too so this is actually a nice thing to do!")

but then it was clear that bradley's case had been self defense he regretted that vote because he was pretty sure she'd have to die either way but it was going to be so much more complicated and painful to deal with that when it wasn't just part of the process

god at one point early in that trial he and kazuki and ichiban had been telling her about karaoke and making plans to all do that together so as soon as the trial was over he asked thebe if they could get a karaoke machine ASAP because if there was any chance she could still have a nice time one more time before dying he really wanted to give her that!!

and thebe was perfect as always and helped with that and they had it all set up but rosamund was very much not in the mood for karaoke lmao........... so the tokyo karaoke bros just sang in her honor after the not-execution because it felt rude not to use it after thebe got it for them so fast

and then the last few weeks was just him working really hard and teaming up with anise and making all these really smart contingency plans that they then never had to use lmao

and then slowly sinking into his "oh i'm useless again" depression after powers were back lol

and goddddd his horrible friday night party confession that went so much more badly than he could have imagined

even though he's The Vain One out of the sextuplets they all actually have really bad self esteem and generally are not going to think girls will be interested in them

and the one really uncharacteristically stupid time he did think that was with this cute clerk at the drugstore because she was nice to him while he was dying from a hangover in her store and touched his hand when she was giving him his change... and then karamatsu had the exact same experience and also thought she liked HIM and they fought over it

and both went there and confessed at the same time and both got rejected lmao

she was just being good at customer service...

but after that he was like ok i am never making that assumption ever again and i am never confessing to anyone unless it's a sure thing

so he really had no intention of saying anything to rosamund, he thought he was SO FUCKING OBVIOUS already with the way he blushed whenever she touched his hand or anything that if she had any interest in return she would have said something

and in their conversations before she'd been like, very averse to romance as a big part of any story and wanted the women in anime and everything to have lives and agency outside of that!! so he also figured she wasn't really looking at this point in her life anyway

and the only reason he ended up saying anything at that party was because she was just becoming increasingly more of a trainwreck with every drink and seemed to have some serious self esteem issues in that department

so he was approaching it as a "hey you probably already know this but i just wanted to make sure you did and remind you that you have people who like you a lot" thing and didn't expect reciprocation in the first place

and thought maybe she'd just be like "yeah i just see you as a friend but thanks" and that would have been closure and would have been fine but he was DRASTICALLY UNDERESTIMATING HOW FUCKED UP SHE WAS AT THE MOMENT

and just panicked at the hanahaki disaster and had no idea what any of it meant or what to do and was like OKAY WOW THAT WAS A MISTAKE AND NOW WE BOTH FEEL WORSE! COOL!

and then it was endgame :face_holding_back_tears:

endgame-wise i kind of liked what i got to do with the peace temple because a museum room that was supposed to be a display of accomplishments was actually just the saddest thing in the world for him and he was just like yeah i sure have already given up on life huh

and being in there with margaret was kind of great after how things started with that w0 interaction that was all about the differences in their accomplishments

and it kind of showed that actually they're just slightly different kinds of defeated and depressed in spite of everything

so i liked how his impression of her evolved over time... it was good

and they ended on a pretty positive cr note

i think? that's most of the game stuff i wanted to touch on?

canon-wise i don't think i really went into this before but i just want to go into like, the kind of toxic cycle he's in with his brothers

because god. it's like, they resent him whenever he does anything beyond what they do, which results in him being more closed off to them because he knows they're likely to be vindictive and sabotage him (or just embarrass him and ruin things for him accidentally)

and so then because he doesn't tell them things they think he's a heartless asshole and kind of gang up on him and treat him like shit sometimes

which obviously is just going to make him harden his shell even further

in the movie they go to this memory world and interact with their 18 year old selves and like, i think they mostly made their 18 year old personalities such drastic opposites from their current ones just for the surprise and comedy of it, but also it actually ties in to that pretty well for him i think

his 18 year old self was this kid who was scared of everything and totally dependent on his brothers, and he's also the only one who seems actively concerned about what they're going to do with their lives after graduation, and when he brings that up to osomatsu he gets brushed off really coldly

and then. they don't do anything with their lives lmao.

so i can kind of see that as the starting point for resentment on his side

the craziest part of this is this episode in the second season where like -- he doesn't appear in the first two segments at all

and then in the third one they're like "oh actually he's not here because we fired him because he was going off on his own and being too successful with girls and wasn't enough of a pathetic virgin anymore"

and he's fucking living under a bridge eating frogs

while he gets temporarily replaced with a white guy from florida lmfao

this is the thing where he just goes into a rage and shoots everyone which like! honestly kind of justified!!!!!!

in spite of all of this they do still all love each other and spend most of their time together voluntarily but like, damn

i truly had no idea to even talk about that in game because how do you explain getting fired from your family

that was the pinnacle of my "They're still technically them and I guess this is canon but uhhhh" category
