Need security advice: since I’m not traveling much these days, I let my vpn subscription with TunnelBear lapse. I now need to mask my location for one day on Saturday. Recommendations?

has strong, negative feelings about (consumer)VPNs in general (They're useful for a few very, very specific things but beyond that they're mostly snake oil)

A new email address (free) and a TunnelBear free 30 day trial?

TunnelBear is good now? We used to use it, some 7 or 8 years ago (to watch BBC television) but it didn't seem very robust.

Tanarian: The short version is that they're good for getting around region based content distribution laws/agreements/rules, but that's about it. Their marketing about security is misleading at best, but I'd call it outright lying. The BS they spout in their ads about public WiFi comes from advice that's at least a decade out of date.

My mantra is that if it's not safe to do something across an untrusted network without a (consumer) VPN then it's not safe to do it with one either. Also, there is no such thing as a trusted network that you don't completely control yourself (and even that's a stretch).

If it's not safe for you to use (to cite a commonly used example) an open WiFi network at an airport to do your online banking, the solution isn't to use a VPN, it's to change banks.

Ahhh, thank you! I mostly just want to get around regional marketing nonsense.

You just "create" an account which means they give you a number to use to identify your account. You don't enter any name or email or whatever. You can pay them even in bitcoin or cash.
