since living with my mother-in-law, the oldest expiration date on food so far is 2014. With her Alzheimer's it is still in early stages, but short term memory is starting to go. The other day we filled 3 grocery bags of expired food. We have held off on the frozen meat that expired in 2015 until trash day today. We don't want the smell.
We also have to do this when she is out of the house at her friend's house. Since my father-in-law passed away in 2020 and sometime before that she claimed she was done with cooking food, this means a couple of things.
1) Prior to my father-in-law's passing, she stopped checking for expiration dates, and he did as well. 2) When my father-in-law passed away, my wife's siblings did not do a good job of checking things. Especially the brother who lived nearby before moving to Ohio last year.
3) Since the dementia/Alzheimer's diagnosis over the past year, none of them, or her friends. have done a good job of checking things.
Now she has been getting meals one way or another, so it is not neglect of her. It is just no one has done the extra step of going beyond the basic checkup.
It is going to be a lot to clean out the house when the time comes
Jus to be clear, the house is in good shape and she is still mobile and fine. It is there are things that can be tossed and someone needs to do it. Sorry for the long post.
Don't be sorry, if you need to vent, this is where to doit. You care enough to talk about it, and I'm sure talking helps some, but getting all that expired stuff out will be a relief as well.
