Hot take, but dating sims and romance plot lines in video games should have an RNG chance of the romance-able character saying “no thanks” no matter what you do.

That’s another thing, games often have romanceable options but rarely have “bestie” options.

I think a randomized response would just encourage players to save scum until they get a positive response

Like if I get my approval to 100 with Wyll in BG3 and don’t romance him, my interactions with him don’t feel much different than if I had 50 approval.

There was a guy in one of the mass effect games who flirted a lot with Shepard but got uncomfortable if you flirted back too hard and explained he isn’t into you that way

I dunno I feel like that would be incredibly frustrating for players
just have characters who are never into you

modern fire emblem could really benefit from this instead of shit tier writing to make everyone fall in love with you

Unless the whole game has a big theme of like “play the hand you are dealt and do your best!” I think that’d be more annoying than anything, yeah

But having characters who are close to the player without it ever becoming a romantic or sexual relationship is certainly not a bad thing

since the whole end goal is to date said character, just being stonewalled at the very end with no hope of getting it completely sours the experience.

there is something to be said about being able to develop strong relationships with characters without dating them

It’d be kinda like if there was a small chance that any match of street fighter could end unexpectedly because the cops arrived to break it up

I just feel like we have generations of men now who think a “no” is either the end of the world or doesn’t actually mean “no”

And it would be nice to see interactive media that portrays “no” as not a big deal

I think being able to pursue an equally rewarding friendship with the character that says no would be a must

more games with dating options need characters that do have explicit sexualities imho. PC-sexual casts are kinda boring to me
