Pauline's dad, Armand, is a businessman who travels a lot for work. He really loves his daughter but he's pretty clueless. His daughter says she's "fine" so he assumes, that, yeah she's fine.
He doesn't realize that he doesn't actually know that much about his daughter and the things she likes and doesn't see her for relatively long stretches of time. He's well-meaning, but ultimately unintentionally kind of neglectful.
One of the reasons he works so much is that he allows coworkers and supervisors to assign him all kinds of difficult duties and accounts that they just kind of don't want to do. He and Pauline have that in common, I guess.
