“the Trevor Nunn original”是指bway原製The most pleasing show, for me, was the Trevor Nunn original (based on Michael Bennett's concept). The story unfolded seamlessly in a sparse modern setting. The main conflicts were politics, love, and the media who wanted to exploit both.
The main challenge for subsequent productions was that current events (the fall of the Soviets in Europe) rendered the politics moot. And that left them trying to construct a musical on top of a rather mundane love story.
Each version became more vapid than the previous one. Because they lost Bennett's three best ideas:
•Focus on the behind-the-scenes politics
•Add the media as a character
•Stage the whole thing on a tilting, moving chessboard

百老匯肯定比倫敦更直接，因為只有一場比賽，而且第二幕的大部分情節發展並非集中在一首主要的歌曲（The Deal）中；但由於劇情場景持續太久，它通常不太受歡迎、使角色感覺像個混蛋，（尤其是Trevor Nunn令人困惑的原始編排『站在原地，憤怒地喊出對白』），並失去了許多原版中更輕鬆的歌曲。

特別是第二幕非常令人沮喪，幾乎沒有任何快節奏的歌曲，而造成最後一幕（儘管整體是與倫敦結局相同的情節和節奏）的可怕收尾，是前段的假父親場景、乃至贏家改變，以及寫得糟糕的最後獨白。
由於許可問題，直到2013年左右，百老匯版本是唯一可以在美國獲得許可的版本，這導致大多數人崇拜倫敦版本，因為他們不知道它實際上是什麼樣的，只是它很受歡迎並且有一堆遺失的歌曲。

如果是指這個的話，其實它不算新歌，是最開始的刪減歌曲，很喜歡這首唱到火車（印象
所以說2003音樂會這是很努力的在Bway本的基礎跑原製/原專順序，跟我一開始的預想的是改了原作正好相反……

所以言下之意是，2013前美國各個製作在僅有歌曲、有百老匯設計前提的情況下，盡力地演出想像中的Chess
如果真有這個大斷層，好像可以理解沿革過來的為什麼新本會長這樣，加上倫敦原製去除了當下直衝的時空背景便難以忽視它的空蕩

雖然有太多真的帥到不行的場景、像是裁判，和Interview
更正一下，“the Trevor Nunn original”的概念在倫敦和百老匯都有，都是他導的，也都有著同樣的現實主義風格
大部分對新本的批評其實是「太（刻意）政治」加上感情線一團亂。
