In this specific instance, a lot of us were very busy over the weekend and communicated that, so having multiple players interpret that as "the old guard characters are refusing to communicate their knowledge" was a little... jarring.
And in general, when someone is in a game for a while, we don't assume that new players want a massive rundown of what's happened in the past 6 - 12 months - if you do, please communicate that! Have your characters ask questions!
Otherwise we're trying to build new things out with new people
Ethlyn specifically can't help with the "you're all in a holodeck" part because she's a medieval lady and she's been too busy learning about germ theory to spend time breaking her brain on C++ (or whatever language Expi runs on) but she's been more than happy to tell people about the monsters and afflictions that have affected the land
Enthusiasm for new plot is fine but if you're making canonical declarations based on the fact that not everyone has tagged yet, you may actually be shutting people out because now they're dealing with an IC conflict that they never actually intended to be in. And that's less fun for everyone.
i was involved with the post and i still felt pretty awkward about this
thank you for posting this
Oh I hadn’t even seen this (I haven’t cracked open the network post yet tbh...) but I’m definitely with you as part of the slow crew this month!!
Hear hear. I know a lot of us (tho I'm speaking for me) seem available more often than we are because we can check plurk/discord on our phones and be present in chats, but then don't actually get time to sit down and churn out tags every day.
same here sooz, when I'm in discord I'm always on my phone, which I don't phone tag in... but yeah, am definitely one of the slower members! and never want my speed oocly to come across as a lack of interest in engagement or willingness to share stuff icly
Also just from an IC perspective: what character would want to respond on the internet to a stranger accusing general-them of a lack of empathy or failing to help or whatever just because they checked fantasy Facebook on the weekend instead of constantly.
I definitely want to say, at least from my end, that generally when I'm talking about that sort of thing it's in response to situations where characters are refusing to share knowledge NOT because of no response oocly.
some characters are understandably frustrated/tired with the new characters demanding answers, and IC conflicts have come up because of that.
that said, I know I mentioned something in chat about Ange being the first person to give Kurama certain insight, but that actually IS a backtagged thread from earlier. so that was partially to establish that he'd gotten that information from her before even though it's only being threaded now
as a newbie, I also found it a little jarring to see some of the way things were being discussed/interpreted which is why I've tried to direct people to other threads or encourage backtagging to get those conversations going ICly.
do you mind if I post this on discord too? so that it reaches more
same for me as suze, often when I'm checking discord or plurk it's when I'm literally in the middle of something, making dinner, family stuff, etc. so it probably makes me seem more available but honestly i haven't been able to get involved with this stuff at all between modding and the utterly unhinged disregulation that my life has become this summer
good for you saying this, I didn't see the conversation in question but that is fucked up and people need some reminders to always assume the best intentions of others
yes. it does make it harder for people to involve in the plot and discussion because they have been now branded as "uncaring" or whatever. also it is important to remember that rp time is not equal to rl time
ty for voicing this out bryo
thesinnerwithin Nods, and for cases where these conflicts come up because of actual threaded conversations that's different! Because it's a case where like... both players are aware that a conflict is brewing and happening
So both parties can decide to escalate the argument ICly, or redirect it, or pause and say "hey do you want them to build some negative CR and keep arguing or something else"
because while there are characters (read Akechi) who would definitely be a prick here it doesn't reach out to all older characters. we have ange trying to help and I'm sure other characters would share their insight & experiences too
but assuming "character has not tagged yet means they are making an IC decision" is blindsiding for a lot of us who were like. Working at a job, or were doing stuff with family/friends, or just got hit with the Clean the Apartment bug
sparklepire Yeah lmao for sure! They are absolutely not a monolith
yeah, I'm not really used to being in games that move this fast, so I'm fairly used to waiting a few days before "everyone" gets their own responses in. we can't, as players, know what's going on with others, as to why they're not tagging unless they publicly say "I'm busy" or "x would ignore the post"
thesinnerwithin Yeees exactly... and I feel like the game has been more considerate of that it other posts, where players can still put their TL links up even if it's on page 2 at that point, or tag other's and not be treated ICly as though it's late
I've definitely gotten the vibe this game is pretty laid back and slow tag friendly, absolutely. this post got overwhelming very fast, which might have had to do with the urgent nature of the timeline and multiple boomeranged threads happening at once.
^ I would still argue that the game is p. laid-back and backtag friendly. this post did blow up but when you look at it, it's mostly due to couple players being active and boomeranging.
yeah, i was a bit more active on the weekend, but i had irl stuff that had to take priority, so when it jumped into the post, i found it very overwhelming so only posted in one place. i personally try to tag as many new players/characters as possible to be able to give information to them if they want it, but i've had a few ic refusals, which is fine
only to have some of those characters be the ones accusing the old timers not sharing information. i personally found it off-putting and just stepped away from the post in general
Yeah. Like the thing I was waiting on (and tbclear: happy to wait! because we are all busy and the mods have said they are getting to things as they can) was an answer to my Q about the map and now I am like well. should I even post, because my character's going to get jumped on for having had a different frame of reference for this stuff.
and because I have been busy this summer working in a greenhouse during heat waves, and therefore: slow!
yeah this summer has been a rough one for a lot of people! i like to assume the thread becoming ic heated came with good intentions of characters being scared and impassioned about this beautiful simulation we all live in XD still, the flurry of activity did seem to leave many players behind
Nods, I don't think it was malicious, just... not very understanding.
agreed. i appreciate you starting a discussion on this
kldfs I'M GLAD IT SEEMS TO BE PRODUCTIVE I was very nervous posting this :'D
oh,,,,,
I've only had mobile access since last thrusday and nor had a chance to read anything so uh
kittylyoko it's been a bit of a weekend here. lmao.
I will say this is now being pretty heavily (and productively) discussed in discord so hopefully this situation won't repeat
i think a quite lot of it can be pinned under "summer killed us"
and thus communication issue
but! it seems like good conversation was able to stem out of it and good points were brought up
ah, I'd defo miss that then because I can't open the game discord on mobile without my phone keeling over
usually plot posts don't even blow up like this so quickly tbh, I think a lot of the fastness of it all was just sheer excitement if it all
