he HATES seph, but is also scared of him; constantly thru the game, the topic of seph gets equal parts "you guys need to understand how terrifying he is" and "i'm gonna rip his head of when i see him [freezes immediately instead]"

it really does seem like, from the perspective of someone who doesn't know the truth, that seph has been cloud's boogeyman for the last five years of his life

but like

cloud "forgot" those five years

so is that fear/hatred the unconscious feelings that have been festering for five year, superimposed onto this life he gave himself

or is he mentally and emotionally still just a few days-to-months past the attack on nibelheim

honestly it tracks that if you cant remember being afraid of a thing and then suddenly remember it, the fear is fresh and new, so you have no defense against it. its too raw

and a lot of times with trauma, esp when the perpetrator is someone close or admired, the victim gets stuck on the "why" of it

so even though cloud is full of anger and fear, and even now post-game when he knows intellectually the reasons why, he might still be struggling emotionally with the "why"

he never got the chance to properly grieve for nibelheim, his mom, and loss of his own hopes and dreams (bc he might have failed his SOLDIER test but i can't see him fully giving up on the first bump, esp not with zack there)

so when sephiroth, looking grown and imposing, stands in front of cloud and tells him "i need your help, i don't want to do the things that hurt you, i just want to defeat the bad guys"

cloud, who doesn't actually have that much distance from those hero worshipping years, has to finally come to terms with what zack already has (or is still struggling with, most likely, esp here in folk)

that the person who hurt him (and them, and everyone) so terribly had the potential to protect them instead, but didn't

(the reasons why and the actual amount of blame that can be put solely at sephiroth's feet still pending, its a lot to process)

zack's touched on that a little recently, how he actually feels about it, how he can't really talk about it. its hard man
