But he's got that complex mixture of genuinely trying to see the best of things while also deliberately hiding the things that are not, and then having trouble because when he does reach a point where he has to reach out, he as a lot of trouble bc people misunderstand him and make assumptions
(I enjoy the conflict between him and Bina that just comes out of trying to cope with a really scary, potentially deadly problem in different ways)
He's a really sweet kid, genuinely, but then gets worn down by those problems he can't solve - he reminds me a little bit of Jaime in that he's got this Thing but also has it "better" than his peers with similar Things, except unlike Jaime he's got subpar parents that only look understanding on the outside
And I think you'd play that complexity of Nice Kid Genuinely Making the Best of It + Nice Kid Internally Fed Up That No-one Gets He's Also Upset + Nice Kid With Irresolvable Emotions About His Situation
Gets recruited from prison to help the ship's captain track down some insurgents-with-a-sympathetic-cause because he used to be one of them, plays himself up as a bad guy nobody should get close to, which turns out to be a facade that is about as sturdy as tissue paper
Turns out he's a big nerd with a substandard dad and once he's literally 70,000 miles from that, he does a lot better. A couple of times a season he takes up some kind of new hobby / project / space find that endangers the ship. Turned into a salamander once because of it (he got better)

which is part of the same continuity as the game Ethlyn's from, and follows her son Leif as he leads a rebellion against the people who took over their country following her & hubby's death! Asbel is Leif's old friend who got separated from him as a kid due to Royalty-In-Hiding issues, and finds him again when he breaks Leif out of prison
He's a brave kid who's one of a small group of freedom fighters (there are a lot of little groups of freedom fighters UNSURPRISINGLY) and he jumps ship to Leif's crew because he's still upset at having been left behind all those years ago, and won't be left behind again when he could help his friend
which he can do really well because he's a powerhouse lil mage
