if you miss any of the previously-free games, you can't get the next ones (but if you missed them, they'll be on sale, so you can catch up!)

to start getting them when they go free, you have to already have one

they'll give one away to you for free so you meet that criteria in their newsletter.

tldr:

sign up for their newsletter, catch the freebie-game link there when it goes out.

refresh that page on the giveaway days, to catch that day's free game

otherwise, enjoy the sales.

I have done their switchmas and their Halloween giveaway before, and I signed up for their newsletter for the free game, and it's one I didn't have yet: Pirates: All Aboard!

they sent it as a redeemable 16-character code, so you don't have to sign up using the same email associated with your nintendo account

I can confirm that it's the game this time around as well as last time. I think that's just... the game they have designated for newsletter sign-up welcome gifts.
