It was chilling near a folder pile, a little less or around 1" from toes to toes. I got a cup and cardboard to remove it but it skedaddled when I wasn't looking.

Yeah, looks like it might be a huntsman; apparently their bite can be quite painful but not life-threatening.

as long as it's not a brown recluse I can skip the flamethrower this time

also huntsmen eat roaches, which would be a bonus!

wolf spiders are a real pain since we had them infesting my mom's garage and she said Wolf Spiders release some sort of chemical when they get killed that makes any nearby spiders aggro

ooh, huntsmens' eyes reflect light, so I'll have to grab my phone flashlight if I see it again in a place I can't get at it easily
Hooded Figure

aaagh, I hope it's not that then! but I just intend to out it outside so hopefully that won't happen

From my googling so far, a recluse would have a skinnier and more oval thorax, while this one's was diamond-shaped. Thank goodness.

This wolf on reddit looks similar enough to be it, especially the body shape. The width of the dark stripes is what's throwing me off; most seem to have much thinner dark stripes

WOLF SPIDER! That's what we call them in West Texas, but I've heard they're also called hutsman spiders, too. XD

And fwiw, their bites are reportedly painful, but while they're less timid than most other spiders, you have to pester them a pretty good amount for them to bite you. If you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone.

And they carry their babies on their backs, so if you find one that looks extra fat and fuzzy, it's a momma and her brood!

Awwww! :-D We'll, as long as they can be a good neighbor eating bugs under my file cabinet, I have no quarrel with them.

looks like a wolf spider of the Tigrosa genus, possibly Tigrosa annexa or Tigrosa helluo

but yes, they do not generally bite unless provoked, and their venom is not medically significant to humans :>

glad you got answers!

(I've been having to catch and deal with my own bugs in your absence, please praise my fortitude. I also had to deal with a mouse.)
