I went back and forth on what Solas' experience in the fade prison was like

but ultimately I think he probably had more time just lying around being trapped than anything else

He could probably see some things, and probably more than the times when he speaks up to conveniently distract Elgar'nan or whatever

But as the Mage recruitment mission in DAI shows: he's pretty capable of seeming unaffected by even the most heinous torture imaginable

so he probably would seem relatively normal in conversation even if he's having an Extremely Bad Time.

And nearly all of those fade conversations seem pretty silly if he could see everything Rook can see
