My parents are being asked to do something impossible. I can't go into specifics, but imagine a banker demanding they bake a cake using ingredients the bank took away from them. Even though my parents still legally own the ingredients

oh my gooood
also, they need to use the kitchen (that's in their name) to bake it, but the bank took the keys away to the kitchen too

I might delete this later, there's nothing anyone can do, and this is a culmination of 3-5+ years of bullshit from multiple sides
I'm also very tired of all this, and wish they could just be given the dignity of baking the cake already, so we can all move on with our lives
neither of them know how to navigate this, and they also don't want my help. they're mortified they're having to deal with this while I'm in town
I extended my holiday visit until the end of the month, both as moral support, and also with the hope we could spend quality time together once the dust settled
I think they're gonna discuss some options with a lawyer tomorrow, but this entire saga (all of it, dating years back) has been devastating for my parents on so many levels, and I know they're also very much ready for it to be over
tbh, this is the primary reason I've fallen off the rp wagon this month. I keep blocking time to get back to it, but it's been hard to focus with this axe hanging over our heads
another wrinkle in this convoluted analogy: someone broke into the kitchen and stole multiple appliances
except that part's literal........
someone did actually break into their house and steal appliances out of the kitchen this week
joke's on them, most of those appliances are 20 years old and don't work anymore
they also stole the air conditioner, and it looks like they might've slept in one of the rooms for a night or two??
I had to talk my mom out of going back and spending the night there to guard what's left, 'cause I don't think it's safe right now
someone called the police on my dad when he went to check on the house the other week....and then the time someone actually breaks in and steals stuff, nobody does shit
anyway, I'm realizing all this is probably one reason I don't make many plurks anymore

I think I knew I wouldn't be able to keep acting like everything's normal and fine way back in 2022, and that feeling's only intensified since then for many reasons I doubt I need to explain
getting laid off right after catching covid was one of them, though. the genocide was another
that said, I still appreciate seeing what everyone else is up to
so I like to check in on folks from time to time
anyway!! This is probably all I'll say on this family thing until it's actually been put to bed. It was supposed to be done by now, but /gestures at everything

I feel like there's gotta be something a lawyer can do because this just sounds like such a bullshit situation. If the bank expects you to go fetch a stick but refuses to throw the stick in the first place, how can you play fetch????

That sounds like a heck of a mess! I'm so sorry. Hopefully a lawyer can help!
dreamcager: yeah, nobody so far can explain to me how this is legal. I'm starting to wonder if the simplest answer is "it's not"
skipthedemon: thank you. we're hoping so too

You are probably correct, that it is not legal. But that seems to mean less and less these days....
real
on a positive note, therapy from over the past few years has helped a lot. I deal with chronic pain, and this would ordinarily trigger a flare up. But so far my body is managing fine. I'll take it as a win
ahh that’s great to hear!!

Oh man, this all sounds so brutal and unfair, I'm so sorry your family is having to go through it. There's no stress like being up against the contradictions and arbitrary injustice of a seemingly immovable bureaucratic machine. I really hope a lawyer can help.

It's very good if your body isn't responding to the situation with flaring pain though, that is definitely a win!
unsymbolic: Thank you. You've summed it up well. My parents have been dealing with it for years now, and I can see the toll it's taken on them
Based on the convo with the lawyer, my understanding is this: It's ordinarily not legal, but they found a loophole. And in exploiting this loophole, they've given themselves all the wiggle room they need to weasel out of the few concessions they did make to my parents
they demanded cake, locked all my parents' cake-making supplies in a closet, threw away the key, and are now saying "see, you're too incompetent to bake a simple cake"
They gave us the illusion of a path forward, but I think they must have been planning this
My parents have been fighting against them for years, and now they’re using this opportunity to paint them into a corner and crush them completely
it's worth noting they've had no problem baking these metaphorical banker cakes for the past 3 years. Of course they thought they'd be able to bake one more, but they also thought they'd still have their ingredients and kitchen
A devastating conclusion to all this. I'm not sure how it could've ended differently, though, and the worst part is they'll likely be paying for it for the rest of their lives
damn

If this were a better timeline, I'd encourage you to go to the press about this because it's the kind of story that used to absolutely enrage the public and scare a bank or corporation into doing the right thing, or else hooking a lawyer who's determined to bring in justice, but... considering the current political landscape,

Not to mention the state of journalistic integrity, uhhh... it's likely to get any sort of sympathy. They're more likely to poke the bank and ask for a handout so they don't run the story or spin it in the bank's favor. :/
