So Conclave is a movie that I thought was disappointing. The performances were good - but the plot had me shaking my head

I'm not talking about the controversial ending, I mean the whole thing

I feel like I would like it more if I didn't know much about the Catholic church?

I'm not doubting the level of drama at the Conclave, but several things happen in this story that just...would not happen

Flying in a random nun as something of a rumour to discredit at priest, seems quite far fetched, as well as Lawrence not understanding the meaning of sequestered.

Like...she'd have to have become a nun after the indiscretions

If she did that during her training she wouldn't have become a nun

Breaking the seal on the apartment is another thing where I'm like no one would do that.

However the discussions around the direction on where to steer the church are probably 100% a lot of where the drama comes from in these things and it kind of seems like the author didn't think it would be enough

Fictional though it may be I was just like 'but that wouldn't happen' and so it took me out of the movie quite a bit

        Anyway - not my favourite

Sing Sing is a very good movie and a welcome light hearted change of pace from a lot of this year's picks

Colman Domingo is fantastic in this - just like I thought he was last year in American Fiction

Problem is he's up against Adrian Brody and I don't think he's going to win

I also appreciated the use of inmates playing themselves to help tell the story which made it feel all the more grounded, and interestingly enough they don't bill it as a true story - but they demonstrate to some degree it is at least based on a true story

Also in a very lacklustre year for best song, this one wins by a mile

It's primarily focused on the drama program at Sing Sing which I think is a great approach - there are lots of other stories where they get into the worst parts of prison life and this one kind of focused on the effects of that on people rather than focusing on the details themselves

I shared the same kind of subtlety that I appreciated in The Brutalist

     The Substance. Oh. My. God.

This is not a movie for me, number one.

It's so viscerally gross - which is the point so good freakin' job but I spent most of the movie watching my sleeves as I hid my face

Can confirm it also sounds disgusting.

I didn't hate the premise, in fact, if there's anything to praise here, it's that.

I'm not sure this is Demi Moore's best role of a lifetime though, I know she won the Golden Globe but I'm a bit hardpressed to understand why.

        Aside from possibly Legacy

It's another one where was like - is she really the lead actress here??

The body horror is so graphic I felt queasy for a few minutes there at the beginning before I stopped trying to watch it

        It's definitely a movie that's memorable.

Best picture material? No. I don't think so.

Kind of a snub not to include Dennis Quaid as best supporting actor, what a viscerally sleezy character that was just as disgusting as everything else and that is high praise because you're supposed to think that.

The only "graphic" scene I could really watch was in the last 20 minutes when it got more silly.

But I mean man is it ever a roller coaster of emotions. Mom also appreciated the humour more in it. I was too busy being like eeeewwwwwwww.

We did the count - we have 15 movies left, and the 3 shorts - total of 18

. Which means we've been through 20 movies already.

haha I was wondering what you'd think of The Substance

I was like ohoho, here we go

I didn't hate the concept but just eugh I couldn't look it was so visceral

        it's such a SQUISHY movie
