donnie to casey
their CR is....rocky. casey came into their lives and changed what would have been a very bleak future, so donnie is of course grateful for that. at the same time, casey's arrival kicked off a series of events that brought a quiet fear of donnie's front and center:

that his brothers are all heroes who are very ready and willing to sacrifice themselves for each other and the world.

NONE of which is casey's fault, of course; the fact that he was the one there to pull the key was coincidence. if donnie were to really sit there and think on it, without deflecting or distracting himself, he'd have to admit-

- that casey CANNOT be held responsible for that entire thing, and only barely even a fraction of it (donnie is almost there. he's ALMOST there)

BECAUSE donnie had made up his mind that casey was at least partially at fault for Leo almost dying (erroneously, and ignoring raph AND mikey's actions too), he kept him at arm's length while everyone else was getting closer

donnie told himself that he was keeping the peace and doing the most of what could be expected of him by just treating casey as kind of a sideline friend. he allowed casey into some of his projects, the ones he didn't mind sharing with everyone else, and he enjoyed when they could talk shop. they had a rough moment when he confessed to casey he didn't trust-

-him and won't let him ever make a decision like that again, but followed it up that he didn't hate him for it and casey even thanked him, so he's like cool. that's understood. never need to think about it again

meanwhile, casey is growing and changing, and getting closer with the rest of his family. donnie isn't paying any attention to that bc he doesn't have to and doesn't want to. so when casey starts getting a little more assertive and pushing back gently on a couple things, donnie takes it poorly. he thought the arrangement they had was working? what gives?

casey was viewing their relationship through a different lens than donnie. casey had assumed they liked one another, that they COULD press or debate without it damaging the relationship, like friends do. donnie did not feel that way, so because he usually just straight up bails when emotional things get hard, that's what he did. when Casey didn't react well-

-he dug his heels in. thus began the cold war, with them either sniping in asides or ignoring each other. donnie didn't want a relationship with casey that needed work bc of his trust and fear issues, and casey felt like he'd been led on or lied to because don was perfectly friendly until casey needed some adjustments, after which donnie iced him out

right now, bc donnie is having a mental breakdown, all that pent up anger and terror over what happened during the movie is lashing out, like lightning arcing off of the main bolt. casey is an extremely convenient target and catching a substantial chunk of that aggression

once donnie comes back and starts addressing those underlying and festering issues of his, he'll have to contend with how he wants to feel about casey going forward. I AM VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT

cloud to zack
cloud is actually starting to move past some of that hero worship and into something a little deeper!!! I AM ALSO VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS! it's not to say that cloud doesn't admire zack anymore or admires him LESS, but there's not so much "he's so good and perfect how could he want someone like ME around" there as they continue to-

-open up and support each other. the more cloud sees zack in those vulnerable moments, where he's afraid or angry or otherwise less than cheerful, heroic zack, the more cloud can see himself as standing on equal ground.

does cloud still think zack is a better person than he is? fully and absolutely

but is cloud starting to realize that zack isn't just made of better stuff than everyone else, that he's holding himself together the best he can and it doesn't always work out well? yes. and with that realization, cloud is starting to view himself as a person that can maybe give zack that protection and care he needs to sometimes be a little ugly and weak

cloud is one of those people like, who can't go get chipotle for himself bc he's not worth the trouble but if his friend is like "man i could go for chipotle" cloud is already getting in the car

however difficult it must be for him to think about not being in folkmore anymore, it has to be a billion times harder for mikleo, so he's letting mikleo take the lead in what they talk about or do. he doesn't really mind being passive for a little while since, honestly, he is fkn tired

and mikleo always takes such wonderful care of him, so yeah he's going to let himself be a bit if an emotional pillow prince right now

at the same time, don doesn't really know how to live with a parent that is very close and always present. for good or ill, splinter was kind of a submarine parent, surfacing when he was able and descending when he sank back into his depression. he's not used to a parent being able to fully handle their own shit AND other people's

the fact that he doesn't have to monitor anything of rue's like their diet or TV or whatever, or clean up their messes or whatever is VERY jarring for him. see: why he is so aggressive about rue charging money, because he still kind of feels like it's his job to make sure the Parent's life is going as well as can be expected

donatello taking the responsibility of getting them home entirely onto himself without any discussion or consultation with the rest of the family (or, frankly, other Star Children) has given him a very acute sympathy for the kind of pressure raph puts on himself on a daily basis. to be honest, it's even from before folkmore, back to when

he and leo were in APOC and were just trying to manage on their own. donnie found out leo had been there alone for a month before he showed up, and without raph there donnie decided it was his job to make sure they both stayed safe until they were rescued. when that rescue didn't come and when it became plain that he COULDN'T always keep them safe

he switched tracks to "okay get us home as soon as possible" and has been operating in that "it's my responsibility" mindset for so long that even once raph showed up, in all his big brother glory, donnie couldn't switch it off. it's why he jokingly was like "heh maybe i'm older than YOU now too" that one time, because like. wasn't ENTIRELY joking

raph will always be bigger and stronger and more heroic, ALWAYS, but donnie learned a couple hard lessons away from him and has developed this inflated sense of responsibility and importance, and has now lumped RAPH into the group of 'needs my protection' and can't UN-lump him

this is exacerbated by the fact that raph almost died back home, and now HAS ALSO DIED HERE IN FOLKMORE.

infallible big brother almost died back home trying to save one of them. steadfast and invincible big brother came back from that, yes, but there are things out there that can do just as much damage. the fact that raph also puts a lot of faith in donnie's smarts just reinforces that belief that he needs to protect raph, too

raph is so busy throwing himself in front of bullets that donnie needs to make sure he gets that kevlar up and onto him in time

so on one hand, raph is very, very closely tied to a lot of donnie's current stress.......but he did that to himself. he forgot how he could lean on his big brother EMOTIONALLY, and take comfort that if he turned off for a little while, raph will keep him safe. he got too used to not having that for the time they were separated

and he and raph have always had a unique kind of connection with each other, the protection brothers. donnie just needs to remember that the raph-protection extends to him as well, and needs to allow himself to rely on it more

april is definitely hands down absolutely donnie's best friend. he talks most freely and goofily with her, he sasses her in a way he doesn't sass his brothers, he listens to her advice in a way that he doesn't do so as easily with other people. donnie has a unique kind of trust with april that she GETS him

maybe not in every single way (she can't, there are physical limitations to her truly understanding everything the turtles go through), but she's never given up on him and she's never completely written him off. more than that, she seems to genuinely love being around him even when he's not being of service. and that's a unique thing, because-

-while his brothers are the same, they've kind of had NO CHOICE but to be around each other, being family and also freaks of nature who cannot see the sun for fear of capture and human experimentation and whatnot. he and his brothers are also a team for crisis management and crime fighting (kinda), and he has a responsibility to be useful to the TEAM

april, while kind of on the team, isn't CORE to the team to function and thus her opinion of how the team functions is both very valuable and...very irrelevant. honestly they keep including her and they need to get her better armor or she's gonna get crushed by a building one day

OBVIOUSLY. CLOUD'S FEELINGS ABOUT SEPHIROTH ARE COMPLICATED

at the end of the game, cloud was pretty much firm on what sephiroth was. a madman monster who killed and hurt and destroyed, and cloud's responsibility to put down. after they all killed sephiroth's god form and cloud killed him one-on-one in the lifestream, he was doing all right. there's NO chance sephiroth can come back from that

even somehow with how folkmore operates, it had never occurred to cloud that sephiroth could show up. bro is dead. he attained his ultimate form so there's no improvements to be made and then he got fuckin wasted by AVALANCHE. the idea wasn't even in cloud's head

and then little miniroth shows up and cloud remembers, all over again, that this MOTHER FUCKER will not just FUCKING DIE and leave him alone in peace. it's kind of akin to how you can feel like you're improving with a mood disorder, and then you have a really bad spell and it feels like you've returned to exactly where you were at your lowest

so, yeah, cloud HATED kid sephiroth. he didn't spare a single thought for how sephiroth would obviously be different at this age, what he went through, when he'd changed, how this could be different here, NONE of that. his head was full of "this bitch AGAIN" and "if he makes me hurt them again i will FUCK HIM UP TO DEATH" etc etc

the first time they meet, cloud hunts sephiroth down to tell him to NEVER EVEN FUCKING LOOK AT HIM and sephiroth is like ok.......how can i avoid u if i can't look at u....... and cloud basically was like what if i killed him here, but didn't have a weapon and then sephiroth mind blasted him in order to get the hell outta there and that ended that

and outside of sephiroth's house he kind of had a horrible realization that maybe, kid sephiroth is actually quite a bit like him, which cloud had a quick nervous breakdown over complete with ~memory headache~

and now cloud is currently struggling with the idea that maybe the best way to stop being scared of the guy and to keep him from doing any Truly Insane Shit is for him to.......yeugh............treat him SOMEWHAT nicely

(this is the thing too: that cloud's absolute abhorrence and terror and hate of sephiroth is so strong because he REALLY, REALLY LIKED THE GUY. i headcanon that cloud didn't just hero-worship but maybe had a bit of a crush on sephiroth, in a kid-to-celeb sort of way)

okay so

not much has changed since the last time i did this, HOWEVER

on donnie's end, he's spent like. this ENTIRE time putting maybe not all the blame, but certainly all the AGGRESSION about what happened when leo sacrificed himself on casey's shoulders

part of that is because he plays favorites and likes leo more than casey. part of that is ABSOLUTELY because of what he saw in the book in APOC, experiencing from a first-person POV what leo went through for part of when he was in the prison dimension

and part of it is because he knows on some subconscious level that if he starts unpacking this thing about leo being ready to die, it is going to change A LOT about their relationship. and donnie HATES change
