"I'm going to psychically break your hand and strangle you"
"btw if I didn't meditate every day and play kal-toh I'd just be doing this all the time around the ship"
bro they are Like This because they are Big Emotions and also Historically Volatile because of it.
part of the reason everyone looks at humans like they're Creatures is because they're unpredictable and openly emotional, but also ahead of the curve inexplicably
vulcans have a whole ass diagnosis for when you lose the ability to Repress It so badly that you start psychically broadcasting it to everyone around you
Vulcans: I am This Close (all the time)
you know, I don't go here and just checked this out of curiosity... and I might have to start going here?
did not realize vulcans were just the emotional dysregulation experience, where the emotion sliders are "no" and "YES"
Jaydeis ohhh YES, GO TO STAR TREK, esp Star Trek Voyager where Tuvok lives
I really shouldn't be surprised?? my dad watched a lot of star trek back in the day, when I was just too young for it
and he hits all the same ND beats I do, even though he's never been diagnosed
laughs YEAH... A NOT SO DIFFERENT STORY IN MY FAMILY
nothing's diagnosed but I look at my mom and dad and go "well"
"I know exactly where I got This and That from"
he was probably like "ah yes I find this relatable" and appreciated it in... a very vulcan way...
Voyager really is where a lot of good Vulcan content lives
TNG is just like "no Vulcans, only Data" and then DS9 is great in its own ways but it does love to just be like "IDK man Vulcans are jerks"
and then ENT just gives us a vulcan doing the gestures at butterfly meme "Is this an AIDS metaphor?"
god :') yeah that was. THAT SURE HAPPENED
the ambassador's uncomfortable look is gold
vulcans are terrified of humans truly
minus solkar, who is a slut,
and doomed all of the s'chn t'gai clan by association
when your ancestor makes out sloppy style with the first human they meet and then makes out with you in front of your captain
fyi "sloppy makeout" in this context is "a handshake" bc the first human who meets a Vulcan goes PUT 'ER THERE not realizing that it's the equivalent of a big kiss
And the Vulcan ambassador goes "yeah. you know? okay."
yeah vulcans being touch telepaths and having most of those psionic centers concentrated in places like the hands = any touch is wildly intimate
meanwhile, spock's ancestor just shaking this guy's hand and forming a lifelong psychic bond with him, as you do
meanwhile spock's dad getting married to a human,
meanwhile spock being half-vulcan and half-human touching and being touched by his captain constantly and having telepathic conversations often and having a bond of their own that even the scholars and poets of vulcan wax on about dwbi
Solkar looking at this drunk disaster of a man and being like "I can't NOT make out with him"
"it's the logical thing to do"
My other favorite thing about Vulcans is the fact that the Vulcan on the right is the cultural equivalent of the human on the left here
mariner t'lyn tendi
my favorite thing about vulcans is that they gaslight everyone into believing they're chill and logical and never lie but in fact they are none of these things
and do none of these things
my kingdom for the chance to rp mariner and t'lyn in a game
I take this to mean that every single Vulcan in Starfleet is a Mariner
none of the humans around get the fact that their calm, sometimes-sarcastic, frankly stodgy coworker in ops is in fact the equivalent of an uncontrollable maverick chaos agent
god mariner and t'lyn in a game would be SO golden
Tuvok: I'm going to help my crewmate with cultural/species-based identity and anger issues
Tuvok: /commits assault with a deadly weapon
Tuvok using Bat'leth
they're just so good
apparently there's comics now? I'm going to have to look into this more
omg yes THANK U for reminding me that comics for LDS exist... I need to Read also
T’Lyn is legit one of the best Vulcan characters in the franchise
Also to consider: we already know what less logical, more morally flexible and emotive Vulcans look like: the Romulan Star Empire. Which is Not Great!
(A thing I just realized while writing this: the Romulans aren’t any less repressed than Vulcans. But for Romulans, the need to repress comes externally from the demands of an all-powerful state that demands service and obedience, not from internal discipline and self-mastery)
Maaaan, that is a good point about the Romulans
External, rather than internal, suppression
theyre having a great time
the fact that spock had to broker their reunification is very telling thanks amanda for your very important input
