random mushy feelings this morning: one day if runt ever asks why Runt? Crichton has a really touching answer, actually

like, it started because runt reminded crichton of the candy

but there's an undertone of more to it. crichton sees Runt as an underdog, like himself. in space, the number one thing that kept crichton safe was everyone around him constantly underestimating him. they saw HIM like a runt, and didn't perceive him as a threat when they should have

so in a way he's subconsciously bestowing that protection on his son.
