I'M NOT EVEN A TEACHER RIGHT NOW HOW AM I SO ANGY
Okay so last semester my English lit teacher was like
It was a lot of work and a lot of stuff that just wasn't helpful to learning
I WANT THAT OTHER TEACHER BACK
At least she was organized. This is...... bad
Who makes a webcam a requirement for a lit course? We're all fucking shut ins, who does this???
So I'm taking MURICAN lit
And we're reading.............. Spanish Conquistadors .......................... poems and journals
From 1359.................................
............................ um
I had assumed that because it's a 7 week course that there would be some weeks that were like yoinked from the original 15
Because my previous prof told me this
She was like Ya, you can manage 7 weeks, it's less lessons but we just are more choosey with the material
He just made week 1 due WEDNESDAY

FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
He only just posted the entire course so I had no idea it was going to be this shit until this afternoon
He literally posted the whole course at noon
Math is ... fine by the way. I have 3 lessons in a video to watch
And then 3 pieces of homework with a quiz at the end
I'm debating on withdrawing, I have never ever withdrawn a class in my LIFE
Even when it was rough but this is actually insane
I have a week to drop so I'll give it a week
But I'm already fuming at the busy work
There's a reading 'checklist' that we have to give short answers to
- What’s the big picture? Why do you think you have been assigned this reading? What is your goal as a reader?
- What’s the rhetorical situation? What type of source is this (primary, secondary, tertiary)? Who is the author and where was it published?
I....... why do I have to write an essay worth of answers for this?
What on earth purpose does this serve
I'm making coffee and going to do my damnedest not to cover this assignment in snark
I will fail, I already know. But I'll try.......
/hi5's in "what the fuck is this person even DOING" solidarity
Bruhhhh this is so bad send help
Lit teachers are just wild creatures who have no understanding of what a time constraint is
We have to turn in annotations on all the readings
I ain't got time for that
I'm also in an accelerated summer course for my grad program that is making me question this teacher's competency, there are just so many things that are baffling
for example, for the summer since she's not on campus and she apparently hosts public "student hours" on twitch where she plays chill games and absolutely anyone can ask her questions about education
she never told us what her channel was
this is an education technology class
and she didn't link her damn streaming channel for office hours
Lol this is my form of rebellion at the moment
oh, and the way her reading quizzes are set up isn't consistent, a question on one contradicted her presentation slides for the section, a question on another was actively impossible to answer because there was an extra black item to "match"
and like 58 points were inaccessible on day 1 because she didn't check to see if the school renewed the license for some group annotation software
She sounds extremely incompetent with technology
the irony has been melting my brain for over a week now
I just started this brain melt
oh! and for a double dose of irony, there's an assignment in a section about "the technology opportunity gap" that involves working on getting an apple iPad teacher certificate, that I can't do
because I don't own apple products, and this is an online course, so there's no computer lab with tech we're using
one might say I'm experiencing a technology opportunity gap
there's another one I can't do, because it involves creating whiteboard/SMARTboard activities, but that's in the "digital citizenship in the class room" section, so the irony isn't as potent
right now the classes only saving grace is that we're not expected to do every single assignment to get an A in the course
How can they assume people just have apple things
my best guess is that this was poorly converted from an in-person 16 week course and that there's a room with SMARTboards and iPads that it's usually taught in, but that just highlights how badly this was implemented even more
Yeah.. that's probably the case
i also wouldn't rule out the professor is assuming everyone is just going to use AI so they're phoning it in hard
those short answer questions are so bad
"what is your goal as a reader" what does this have to do with understanding the work "what's the big picture" what does this even mean
LOL YA...... so that handout is 4 pages of these kinds of questions
It's so flowery and ......... useless
If I get passed the teacher's incompetence, the material we have to read is at least good? Like there's some thought into the sources we're looking at
But this genre crap is ..... so bizarre
The week - not a week, the Mon-Wed theme is Medieval Travel Narratives
So............ POST-COLONIALISM literary theory but like
We have to read Mandeville (forgery, liar, made Marco Polo look bad lol)
So like. THERE'S EFFORT IN THE CHOSEN SOURCES but the execution is awful
Just so scattered and busy and distracting
I have been doing this work nonstop for 5 hours and I only just caught on to what the prof is actually trying to say about the objectives for this Mon-Wed source group
There were no lesson objectives listed anywhere
I looked. I promise. That's the first thing I look for every lesson thrown at me
Because WHAT'S THE POINT should be like priority.
But nope. NO lesson objectives
Sir. May I suggest a lesson in ~Lesson Planning~
I am going to take my cynical ass to the kitchen and make dinner lol

??????????
ma'am, what are you doing???
I'm losing my mind, that's what's happening
I think she's taking you down with her lol
here I thought the ed law class was going to be the one stressing me out because of legal jargon and upsetting topics, but no, it's the fucking tech class because of incompetence
hahaha I had the same idea between the math and lit class
Lit? I know how to lit. EZ. MATH?? FUCK ME HELP
And it's all down to the professor
I would rather go back to reading about tort liability, please, and that's with one of the discussed cases being about a student that got sexually abused because of a teacher fucking up real bad
Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez
yeah, shit like that is why I thought the readings and assignments for the ed law class would be the more stressful ones
because oh boy, can a lot of things go wrong when you have so many vulnerable people in one place, and people don't exactly go to court over nice things
Ya, that would be anxiety inducing
And it probably still is, but it just seems like this other class is worse for different reasons....
I suspect it has to do with being able to prepare myself, I can look at one of the ed law assignments and get an idea of what I should be prepared to be upset about, the ed tech class has found new ways to upset me that I couldn't have predicted every single day
probably a similar thing for your two classes, math isn't your area, so you're going in already prepared for some parts to be rough
and then the lit class came in with a stadium of random steel chairs
probably also doesn't help that you've taught language classes and I've taught some comp sci, so there's an added professional level to our offense at the incompetence
I am absolutely comparing this guy to my own classroom methods lol
I taught online for 3 years before it was cool
And this is driving me insane
We were supposed to do an introduction thing for class like a discussion board
And part of it was like "Recite your favorite poem"
....... ya I ignored that
So I took an excerpt from Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" which is actually a favorite of mine. Albeit, a short story
I am curious if I'll lose points for my blatant disregard for poetry
I am just........................ not a poetry person lol
I did one math lesson and I'm already upset with myself
But my brain just can't handle it
I can't visualize it in my head so it just turns into chaos and then I'm overwhelmed so then I'm frustrated and then I give up
And I know it's easy and that just makes it worse
I can't handle multi-step problems
My brain completely shuts down
I do not have the brainwidth for anything beyond 1 step lol
Because I can't get passed step one to figure out what the step two will look like

godddddddddddddddddamn I'm stupid
I need a break from ed tech nonsense, hit me
show me a problem and I can help you walk through it
or hell, if you can wait for me to get dinner sorted and eaten we can do a call and I can walk you through it live
I appreciate it! I managed to get through the one that was stumping me
It was a word problem, kinda. If CAD 1.34 per liter, what is it in USD per gallon if CAD 1 = USD 1.005
So I had to figure out the conversion of the currency and liters to gallons and my brain went kaput
I figured the currency part but then when it came to putting the currency part into the liters/gallons part I couldn't figure out how to put them together into the same equation. If that makes any sense
oh yeah, unit conversions. there's a couple of ways to organize that info, the one I usually use is sometimes called "train tracks"
so, unit conversions relies on this idea in math that multiplying a value by "1" doesn't change the value any
and there are multiple ways to represent "1"
for example, these are all equal to each other
Ya, that was the first part of the lesson
These parts make sense. It's just when there's multiple pieces to convert to get the result that I get stuck
if you have two values that are considered "equivalent", then you can get "1" by dividing them, like this
Oh, that's a good way to look at it
but you can always multiple by more than a single "1" and that doesn't change the value, so these four things are also equivalent
So the idea is to kind of put the 1 for 1 in a row with each other to find the solution..?
yup, you just have to make sure your "unit fraction" for each 1 is set up correctly for the conversion you are doing
because there's always 2 ways to do it, here are the ones for liter to gallon based on how I remember the conversion
the little ~ over the = means "approximately", because the conversion between metric and imperial is rarely a nice number
How do you know which is the top part of the fraction, which goes on the bottom
it depends on where the units you are trying to convert away are
So what's the correlation I guess
for example, in this problem you have started out with something in "CAD per liter", meaning that CAD is being divided by liter, if we write it as a fraction, so to divide out correctly, we need the conversion fraction with USD divided by CAD and liter divided by gallon
I've marked the unit names in colors, basically since there is a "liter" unit in the numerator (top of fraction) and denominator (bottom of fraction), those will divide out, same for the CAD, leaving just USD divided by gallon
and now it's just multiplication of fractions, multiply the numbers on top and divide by each number on the bottom
So CAD needs to be opposite
Or like diagonal because they have to cancel to get the solution
yup, needs to be both above and below to divide out, just like with numbers
Okay that makes more sense
That might be part of what I was doing wrong
it's a very common mistake, so don't beat yourself over it
So if the unit isn't in the solution, make sure it's opposite so it can get cancelled
like, I've seen graduate math students mess up a problem because they mixed up a unit conversion somewhere, it's so easy to do that on accident when setting up differential equations
Ya, I am seeing that and this is just lesson 1 lol
I still have 3 lessons to get through for the week and I was so confused with just this and couldn't see where I went wrong
I was a little too scared to move on lol
one of the perks of using computer tools for math assignments is they can tell you if you are wrong quickly, unfortunately they're still pretty bad at diagnosing why it's wrong and working out a way to explain it
so great for practice problems, bad for teaching a skill by itself
Ya.. I am seeing that very quickly
Thank you! I think that helps a lot
I'm gonna try to do an extra homework to see if I got it
welcome! let me know if you get stuck
lol more school grumbles but lit gets it this time
We have these video lectures we have to watch and there are quizzes scattered throughout
Literally just to check if you watched it
Like one says "How many times did my phone go off in the background"
Also I got the answer wrong so I had to redo the quiz lmao
Just a waste of time I hate it
.....why are the quizzes over things that no one would be paying attention to
that's some fucking stupid course design right there
the emphasis should be on what you want them to pay attention to, and if people know you're going to ask questions about "how many times did I take a drink" or some shit they'll be paying attention to that and not the course material
Yeah..... it's questionable
at least the quiz questions I'm annoyed at are actual questions about course content, they're just programmed badly
also, who has time to go through their own videos and count how many times a phone went off?
don't you have anything better to do?
