[Videos, history w/ a side of politics]The Surprisingly Strange History of the Renaissance ...
latest #22
Kaz is one of my fav creators, they have a good amount of queer history videos along with more typical history topics... and this one is fascinating just knowing the context of how and when Ren Faires got started
speaking of history stuff I stumbled on a REALLY good video talking about right-wing history youtubers in general, that also made some great points about the role of history education

sry for all the screencaps but I wanted to keep the source/credit of those quotes intact

the tl;dr is that history HAS to be put in a modern context for it to be taught, and trying to be slavishly faithful to portraying 'the way things really were back then' would be impossible for regular people to understand
ngl one of the main reasons I clicked on this video is because Shad was mentioned in it. I used to occasionally watch his main channel, because it was just stuff like 'how effective were medieval weapons' and basic content like that
but.... Shad himself always gave me really weird vibes, and I quit watching his videos purely based on those vibes. like.... I think I subconsciously realized that he never once talked about women in a medieval context or anything like that

then I found this video was going into how he has a second channel complaining about DEI and woke and etc and then I was like... 'oh my vibes were spot on huh'
honestly most of the historical edutainment youtubers I watch are female creators, partially because they tend to cover things like historical fashion and trends/design that male creators rarely if ever talk about
and the ones who are especially wrapped up in which weapons were the 'best' or warfare or etc also tend to be the weird right-wing ones (not always, but often), so tl;dr I have to be careful about who I watch exactly because of how many ppl are obsessed with history because they can ignore that women were involved
Kaz even briefly mentions it in their video
and like... I don't think those sorts of history fans will ever fully go away, but how loud/toxic they tend to be is definitely influenced by the current political climate. Otherwise Shad wouldn't post more to a second channel to complain about DEI over a main channel actually talking about history
(also the video and people in the comments both were talking about how Shad wrote a god-awful fantasy book starring a rapist that is forgiven for it b/c he knocked people up. absolutely RANCID. youtuber books stop being garbage challenge)
(okay 'not all youtuber books', the ones I have by youtubers that are just instructional like cookbooks or sewing books are great)
"Soon Be Wearing"
heck yeah pineapples best fruit
lmfao what the fuck
that's what I get for even vaguely mentioning politics I guess
