one of my favorite bands (xiu xiu) has already made the decision to pull all their music off the platform, and hopefully other artists follow suit
yeah :/ i moved to a diff platform (tidal) last year due to ai shit but if i hadn't, this would have absolutely been the thing to get me to cancel
I know that decision is not an easy one esp. for smaller artists
yeah, for sure. and lol even though i discovered them on spotify i'm glad we can all leave
I've been on Pandora for years myself, though it's not quite the same
I'm a youtube + ublock origin person myself, does all the streaming I need pretty easily for free
bands get my money via bandcamp or concert tickets or merch sales
yeah ive gotten a lot of good music from bandcamp too
Oh thanks for the source I'd heard chatter about this and had already cancelled my subscription for this and other reasons but it's good to have something succinct I can point people at
no prob! i'm glad if this can reach people and make even a tiny dent in their profits
Gross. Glad I dropped them they did those layoffs...
time to go take manual note of my playlists i guess so i can try to recreate them elsewhere!
Ah heckkkkkk. I already knew they were not the most savory company but ughblugghhhh
apple is also a Company but fwiw i moved to apple music 2 years ago and have never missed spotify. Apple music actually has lossless audio which Spotify has been promising and not delivering forever
nighthide: I don't know if Tidal has similar library, I suppose that depends on what you enjoy? but I have very much liked my tidal sub
apple music is about the same price and has almost all the same stuff
I mean, they're apple, but yknow
the only thing I miss from spotify with apple music is the sleep timer feature
I paid like five bucks for a month subscription to tunemymusic to import all my shit over
I was gonna ask how apple music is cause i've been on Spotify for years and losing my playlists and library... weh...
my big bonus with apple music is that it actually likes my local files and happily plays them, which spotify was increasingly unwilling to do
Well then I’m migrating to tidal thank you
woah, thank you all for responding and helping people with alternate options, totally didn't even expect this to get shared but i'm super happy
Time to swap to tidal I guess lol
I moved to Tidal a couple years ago, I rarely run into a song I want that it doesn't have anymore
I have also just switched to Tidal recently and I'm happy with it
and they're missing very little of what I want that spotify had
has anyone used the transfer function on tidal?
yeah i haven't felt the lack of spotify at all
i did transfer over all my liked songs when i moved
it worked fine, there was a limit of like 500 or something tho
not for liked, but to transfer over
I used a third party (tunemymusic) and just cleared my cache to get around the limit
i do wish i could edit my playlist "cover" images but that's also like, whatever, if i ever want to share them i can do it and also send a picture and be like this is the cover image. to me
hmmm ok good to know, ty!
huh, I was able to upload my own cover pics on tidal?
sorry if this is a silly question also: do they do podcasts too or just music?
on the playlist itself, click "edit" and then there's a "change image" button
Oh, I'd been planning to leave Spotify after they gave a shit ton of money to Trump's inauguration ceremony but then got overwhelmed trying to find a replacement so the recommendation of Tidal is great and just what I need to switch.
ah, it looks like the cover image thing is a recent update
but they definitely have it now
nighthide: tunemymusic is a separate service for transferring music between different services because none of them will agree to talk directly to each other
oh i see my timing could be better lol
tunemymusic will charge a one time fee for 500+ songs, so you may want to check if you have a tidal sub active or anything
stahlritter: I just parsed my favorites into three playlists and cleared the cash between each import....
Anyway, the sound quality is pretty nice. I don't think I'll mind this switch
oh I'm fully under 400 I'm fine but bless
Try contacting them idk what they’ll do
The addons thing on tidal I think means their DJ addon

only these missing, which, given the romanovs haven't been on spotify for years, not too bad

lmao fuck off
tidal has better audio quality
I’ve been looking for a new service for a while but the thing that draws me short is finding another music streaming that has a web browser version
Are there any that have that out there?
Tidal also has a browser version!
Apparently my music is too obscure for Tidal. Apple seems like the lesser of two evils for now but hopefully other options will improve as people leave spotify.
tidal's not available in my region
ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
YourOverlord: had to drive somewhere but nice

I’ll take a look at tidal when I get to work
youtube has a much wider library and depending on the plan, the music account is bundled into the sub
if you can search it on the main app, you can search for it on the music app and download it. downside is iirc it deletes after a while + non "official" uploads are at the whims of the yt delete crew, but then so is any streaming content atp
I did try yt music and a couple caveats with its player:
If you have a large playlist and say “I want to shuffle this playlist but start with this one specific song” that you choose it’ll only play a portion of the playlist
And if any song yt categorizes as “kids music”, it stops playing and you have to manually tell it to play which was frustrating
Those are pretty specifically me problems tho and others may not have issue with those
oh yeah def the controls are probably the wonkiest out of the music streaming options i've tried, but the ability to search the vast yt library wins out for me personally. if a wide selection/obscure music is a selling point, yt music is a good paid alternative to spotify
(alternately just sail the seven seas if there really is no other choice)
yeahh I ditched at the start of the year this sadly does not surprise me
Bandcamp is also great for obscure music AND gets money right to the artists
(if you are in an economic position to do so)
I mostly just use web browser streaming at work where I can’t download anything so tidal might be my answer for that

I use my [redacted] years of mp3 collecting and foobar at home HAHA
oh tunemymusic has gotten way faster recently
last time I used it, it took like. half an hour to transfer 1000 songs
thanks for the tidal rec! I've been wanting to switch away from spotify for a while but I couldn't figure out what to use instead
yeah I'm looking through tidal now and this ain't bad
the only songs missing for me that are a tragedy are the slayers OP songs

but I've had those mp3s for decades now so they will be at home listening
tbh most of the songs that didn't transfer from my playlists were ones that disappeared from spotify a while ago as well, so vOv
and as more people migrate to alternatives, we might see more artists/publishers move catalogues to non-spotify places like tidal. I think I've seen more things show up in the couple of years I've had this
Yeah, a few of mine were missing out of uhhh a lot categorically. Starkid musicals and a couple other 'oh yeah that makes sense' kind of obscure stuff on playlists I still have but rarely use (or the MASSIVE Dr. Demento one I got from somewhere)
and the Klezmatics Hanukkah album isn't on there, which means my holiday playlist no longer has my favorite cover of The Many And The Few, but that's a small price to pay (and some of their other stuff is on there, so there's hope!)
Can I look through Tidal's library without a subscription? Like do I download a free version with ads? The website didn't have a search bar I could find.
If you make a free account you can look through all the music without a sub
Oh is this what people are dunking on spotify for? Yuck.
well, was already waffling on cancelling, this pushes me to cancel
Ugh - I’ve been a Spotify user since they made landfall in the states in 2011 - this is so gross. Time to say goodbye
Ok so for reasons I had to go with Apple Music to transfer my playlists - does anyone know how to access the playlists I transferred on Apple Music? I cannot for the life of me find where they live
you cancelled it so hard you've never had it in the first place
rosebriar: yeah, I was looking on my phone and my laptop and couldn’t figure out where they transferred to
coveredinbees:

iOS on my phone they’re under the library tab at the bottom there’s a playlists option and they’re all under that
nighthide: that date is what computers spit out if there’s an error and the date it’s reading is 0, I’m pretty sure it’s canceled lol
rosebriar: that’s what I’d assumed but this is what I get - I think I’m going to try to see if I’m missing updates/need to retransfer
Ok I think I had to turn on sync which I thought had been on already - waiting to see if that works
Yup we’re gucci - for people with iOS having the same issue on their phone, check music under your app settings and make sure sync setting is enabled
I moved to Tidal when Neil Young left Spotify, but I went back because I had tried 4 other services and the user experience was SO much worse. But at the same time...
It has the option to "go to song radio" or something to that effect, which is basically "make a Playlist of similar items"... that could be it? But I dont know for sure
I'm glad I stopped bothering with Spotify, what bothers me about the site is that it messes up audio for some songs somehow.
I personally use Bandcamp to listen to music.
proud spotify hater since day one
do you have to have a paid account to use the search function on Tidal?
i was able to search for things before i signed up, to check what they had in store

rolling my eyes
yeah I saw that the other day when I deleted my account and laughed
there's another reason: Spotify isn't doing it's due diligence and people are uploading AI-generated songs claiming it's new stuff from existing artists (one case being an artist that's been dead for over a decade)
yeah, I do not want to listen to AI shit, I want to find new artists
I have no idea since I did not do that. But there may be a reddit that has more info
