Wait, is this the one where they kill not-Blofeld? I thought that happened much earlier.
With some genuinely impressive helicopter work.
Since there's ten years between Blofeld's last appearance (Diamonds Are Forever in 1971) and this movie. (1981)
I feel I owe the Moore movies a bit of an apology, since in retrospect they put so much effort into practical effects and produced some genuinely astonishing showstoppers.
Haha wow, Blofeld's treatment here was even more disrespectful than how he was treated in No Time To Die. (At least, a little bit more)
It took me longer to warm up to Roger Moore's portrayal compared to other Bonds, though maybe I didn't pick the right movies to start with. (Golden Gun, View to a Kill, and Moonraker, in that order) Once I watched Octopussy, it clicked for me.
Oh that jump they did by re-jigging the car so the driver sat in the center so it moved the center of balance - and then did a LOT of math
And they just...did it. In one take.
Just like the 'running over crocodiles' bit.
That is insane to me. (And also makes me think that I should watch more Jackie Chan movies, where thinking of something insane/dangerous and just doing it seemed to be a recurring thing; I've only seen Drunken Master 2 as far as his earlier movies go)
Watch the Police Story movies if you want that.
It's him basically going "I have to try and top Buster Keaton."
And genuinely sacrificing himself to do it.
I'm at the Madrid car chase, and I doubt that the car that Bond is using will last long after this chase haha
This movie kind of makes me want to visit Europe, though I don't like traveling. (That, plus time and money would be issues)
I mean, I haven't been yet, but it's absolutely on my list of things to do before I die.
And it's not like I have any reason to visit the US now, so
Doing stuntwork on skis (and in a bobsled tunnel) seems nuts to me.
(And I agree - I don't have any reason to visit the US either. Last time I went over there for an extended period of time was pre-9/11, last time I visited even briefly was pre-Covid, and I don't intend to go any time soon)
(Something about being arrested by the Gestapo and thrown in a modern concentration camp puts me off the idea.)
Enjoying the movie so far. I think I'm at the climax. (Bond is climbing up a cliff towards a monastery)
That fall from the cliff was a seriously impressive stunt - my stomach dropped in a way that I haven't felt since the Mission Impossible movies.
I liked how the scene didn't use any music and it just let the action play out.
The scenes with Bibi being hit have some pretty obvious cuts at the moments of impact.
I love the look on the Russian general's face as the ATAC goes flying off the cliff. "It's just a little airborne - it's still good!"
Did not realize that Julian Glover was in this.
Yeah, these movies neeeever stinted on the amazing stunts.
And I admit the GoldenEye jump at the start blows i out of the water.
That part where the skis fall off give the horrifying impression that something has gone wrong with the stunt, even if that was probably an intentional part of it.
I'll have to watch The Spy Who Loved Me some time.
It's one of those movies I apologize to now.
You roll your eyes at a billionaire using their money to destroy the world when you're a kid, because who is that hateful to devote that kinda time aaaaand then JK Rowling happens and you go "Oh, ok."
"I owe these movies an apology"
