So, for those who don’t know, I work in special education
I’m a one-on-one aide assigned to students when their IEPs call for one
The student I currently have, I try to foster independence as possible and thus hang back and watch from afar and then go over to the student when it looks like I’m needed
Student is having lunch, admin goes up and goes into their backpack (without asking the student, that I could see)
I come up from behind the admin and ask her, “looking for something?”
This visibly startles her, and she asks “where did you come from?”
And without thinking about it, I reply “the shadows”
So much so that 20 minutes later my immediate supervisor had a talk with me about “professionalism”
more likely her getting caught if she was bag searching without permission
astrellaria: she says she called the parent and got permission which I believe, but still you can at least talk to the student before just going in their shit
I don't see how your response was unprofessional at all, either. "I'm always watching wazowski" would have been
Like just because they’re in special ed doesn’t mean you treat them like a non-person
last I checked mentally disabled people do in fact have things like a sense of humor and a need for lighthearted socialization
swirlix: not sure if I was unclear but it was the administrator I startled and replied with a smart ass remark to
how tf is that an inappropriate commehnt
Yeh this is just an "got caught" reaction, you did nothing wrong.
yeah no, you didn't do anything wrong and this smacks of retaliation
it took me a while to understand but i think professionalism means acting like an unfeeling automaton / is code for being corporate-jargon-brained. no jokes allowed.
i can see how people who are not your friends would say a joke is unprofessional. sorry this BS landed at your door.
I think it's very much "don't contradict me in front of a student" thing
that's the most mild fucking joking response you could possibly have in that situation too. i think she would have complained no matter what response you gave
I mean the one good thing about the massive clusterfuck that we currently live in is that shit like this barely phases me now
I mainly shared because I thought it was absurd
If I were in the US, I would get into so much trouble for what I am saying.
