I think hell no I've got two manuscripts that are built entirely on this model and I'm not changing my ways lol
According to what style guide?
And what's the new solution instead?
Yeah, things go in and out of fashion. I've also been told that it's out of fashion to describe your protagonist's appearance unless their appearance is an obstacle.
It's a lot to keep track of lol
I think that an artist should choose for themselves how they express their art.
That who cares what in "in style" or not? Style is supposed to be how someone writes, not whatever a critic thinks is the "good" way to write. And don't go back to that "coach" for advice, if the best they can do is parrot what others say.
Spelling and punctuation are out of style as well. Make “charmingly archaic” your style and buck the trends.
to answer everyone's question.... YouTube channel named Bookfox. normally I love his advice. this time I hated it, especially since he didn't bother giving an alternative.
Thoughts/telepathy, non-English language words, and conversations written in Englush but implied spoken in another language WILL be formatted in italics in MY manuscripts. If someone doesn't like it, they can suck my yodeling pickle. (I really need to buy one of those for anyone who calls my bluff.)
Viksbelle: Yeah, as long as you are consistent through your book, so that the reader understands what is going on, do whatever you want.
Normally I think Bookfox is a great tutor and mentor for new writers. This is the first time I've hated his advice.
I will also continue to use italics for all internal thought. AND I will continue to advice clients to do so if I'm hired as their editor. And Tamara needs to get me a yodeling pickle too.
Why would I trust this man? He can't even correctly use less and fewer
Also he immediately irked me by saying that the italics were a thing people did "40-50 years ago" and then using Anne McCaffrey as an example. So the gist: You are old and Anne McCaffrey is an amateur? My dude, please piss right off
(I noped out after the less/fewer stumble so I'm not even sure what argument he makes but I want to slap his face)
The dude has written 2 books, one about writing. How can anyone trust a person talking about writing if the person has no actual experience in writing?
Brandon Sanderson is doing a writing course, I'd trust him way more.
Yeah, Brandsando puts out shorts from his class/workshop almost daily.
I just subscribed to Brandon's channel. Thank you for that reference!
Yeah, Bookfox tends to talk more than he writes. Normally this isn't a problem. Most of his advice is sound. I watch him to learn ways to explain things to new writers. But NO ONE is getting this crap piece of advice from me, and I'll only watch him with a wary eye any more.
I am switching to ALL CAPS for print and blinking for ebooks.
Now is the time to embrace Comic Sans!!!
dkronfeld: I will hug Comic Sans with one arm and Papyrus with the other!
BodhiPaperclip: Be sure to take advantage of the new “virtual voices” to read your books so badly that they cause vomiting and bleeding from the ears! Because it is trendy and eliminates the need for even more annoying human labor.
I'll use italics when I want to, is what I think; I fake it with asterisks or slash marks when I don't have any other way to indicate them.
SFFCorgi: yeah, I use a lot of asterisks in Second Life.
