Space Catholicism (kinda) in a dystopian galactic empire with eldritch entities that would give H.P. Lovecraft night terrors? Bring it,
(Yes, I'm aware of the problematic fans. No, I don't like them either.)
for some weird reason, everything leads back to 40k.
Not gonna lie, it was the Space Catholicism and the Lovecraft/cosmic horror angle that hooked me. Also, the fact that it's a sci-fi/fantasy kitchen sink probably explains why everything leads back to it.
it's like the JOJO's of tabletop, the memes breach containment and you get surprised that it comes from this.
Space Marines? 40k. Grimdark? 40k. the image of Orc's in popular culture? 40k.
Funny thing: I didn't used to get grimdark. Now, well... /waves arms at everything/ If I have to live in a dystopia, could I at least live in one with style??
I may have gotten the first Space Marines game on sale recently.
Oh! Funny enough I was watching some history-themed videos recently that had Warhammer references! I've heard of the problematic fans too--but it seems like lately EVERYTHING has troublesome fans at this point, if you enjoy it, don't let that ruin things for you.
The minds behind 40K really drew on history for their inspiration, and I'm finding a lot of overlap between military history geeks and 40K geeks.
There's one Imperial Guard division, known as the Death Corps of Krieg, who look more or less like WWI-era German soldiers in gas masks... and carrying futuristic guns.
I know of one weeby 40k head whose YT vids I like that managed to play Oda Nobunaga as an orc.
Oh man, that is clever. Usually I think of the Orks as space Cockney football hooligans, but I love this take!
(Mind you, the Orks amuse me more than they should, but then again, they're one of the few factions having fun in the 40K-verse, so their morbid humor might've rubbed off on me).
dude even connected the orks to their V E R Y British roots and references.
Yeah! I found that vid in the reccs. Will check that one out in the morning (is tired)
