Distance. It's way more likely that the truck will have to slam on the breaks than lose a log, and if you're too close to avoid slamming into the back that'll fuck any passenger car right up.

recently saw a video that you should always turn your steering wheel when standing behind a truck, in case someone crashes into you from behind, you won't get crushed against the truck but instead get shoved to the side .. that's burned into my brain now!
