i am having 2 teeth extracted tmrw (wisdom that has mostly come in and a back molar) and i am Big Nervous abt it
its local and not general anesthetic and I'm kind of like. is that ok??? are we sure
also i have a slight infection where the molar is; ive been on antibiotics since Monday night and it doesn't actively hurt, is just a liiiitle sensitive, but I'm still scared
also if anybody has had this done before and has advice for me re: healing and preparing, i would appreciate
this dentist hasn't told me shit tbh the office kinda sucks

you've got this
they'll get em out and it won't be an issue at all, you got this sis
I got all my wisdom teeth out at once in my 20s and basically: healing was like. a week (that I can remember) and mostly ate soft foods
if they've got it, they'll stitch the area up with these stitches that dissolve on their own when it all heals up so you don't have to go back and get them removed
im getting a bone graft also where the molar is coming out for an implant
yeah i heard that re: the dissolving stitches, i hope that's what they use
that one's outta scope for me I gotta stop the job (I have no advice to give)
I'm really hopin for you for dissolving stitches
they didn't mention needing to schedule a follow up but imma be real, the communication for this office is like. not good
i had all my wizzos removed without general anesthetic! bc i wanted to drive myself home lol. i wont say its PLEASANT but it wasnt like fresh trauma
yeah it sounds like it...
keep those soft foods, no straws, take ur pain meds religiously!!! idk about bone grafts though
the molar coming out i already had a root canal. but apparently it wasn't good enough bc it's infected/cavernous again so i elected to get it yanked
im like im not getting a second root canal when the first one already failed
this is a one strike ur out situation in here
soft foods, no straws, drugs
got it thanks guys

we will make it through dental hell
smacks into ur tentacles also
the dentist office should also give you some good caretaking tips

if they dont theyre failures
they might afterwards i just wish they did BEFORE
they're kind of the rush in-and-out sorta deal
once i get the implant I'm probably gonna look for somewhere new
im spoiled bc the dental practice i went to in oregon was SO GOOD
I also recommend warm salt water rinses 2-3 times a day. Just take a mouthful, tilt head to gently move water around, spit out
Helps keep wound site clean
I would try calling or emailing and requesting some basic pamhplets or other manuals for after care tbh
have done this. the Novocaine hurt far more than anything else. eating soft or liquid for a week was suffering. the actual tooths being gone was easy and painless. afterwards was a... ache? but not a pain. dull.
Godspeed
I think well cooked pasta is good for healing too? You could cook a big batch and add cheese maybe to have for easy reheating
very luckily i don't live alone so if i really needed soft foods but didn't have energy i can get the fam to help me out, but yeah
i don't like to rely on other ppl bc I'm independent to my own detriment sometimes
we ain't gettin into all that
i had 7 teef out in my 20s, i did get put under but for recovery, classic bag o frozen peas on the cheek was my hero. putting and yogurt (depending on temp sensitivity), mashed foods, were useful in the post teeth economy for sure
I did discover a lot of foods blender well. and the desire to BITE THINGS will start a few days in
i love apples and apples require BITING so apple sauce was also nice for me. think about what foods you like and what mashed textures are tolerable and go from there
not the same at all but colonoscopy prep is a thing we go through too often in my home and also involves soft foods. before mine i had a big batch of pasta with mozerella and tofu and that basically sustained me for 2 days prior and two days after, plus tons of applesauce and jello pudding
i see a lot of advice for smoothies for teeth, i think you just need to be careful not to use a straw for it bc of the mouth holes
i had a crown recently but it was 2 weeks after the initial root canal so i had to do soft food for all that too and it just. teeth pain bad! don't feel bad if you end up eating a lot of weird things as long as they sustain you
Not using straws comes down to creating a suction in the mouth, which can be detrimental to vulnerable healing wounds
For that matter, be mindful how you drink from bottles for the same reason >>;
i don't often use straws but noted re: bottles also. open container beverages only
a little livin on lizard mode
im probably going to have a lot of pasta, naked green juice, and applesauce and ice cream tbh. im going to cry from lack of protein
scrampled eggs gonna happen a lot probs
tofu protein too! and fish can be good soft protein
tofu...........

me and tofu don't often get along
i was gonna say maybe soups but the slurp function will probably be bad
Not if you get a thicker one
I had a butternut squash bisque last night that was def gooshy
Thickened it with a little bread wasn't bad! but definitly sort of. not slurpy? like you had to chew, but a little
soft breads in broth ARE a healing staple
they make them in bigger containers that pour too
not that brand but uhhh pacific i think
ive been mixing tofu with scrambled eggs and it has changed my life i dont even notice it
thick creamy soups were good for me. like a nice tomato soup or creamy mushroom (or whatever flavour of choice for you)
dental woes... most everyone called the soft foods thing but i know when i had my various extraction adventures, other foods to avoid:
- extreme temperature foods (let your soup cool down, get your smoothie away from freezer cold)
- food that CONTAINS or breaks down into small pieces (popcorn, nuts, and seeds are the general example) — basically you want to avoid things that could become small enough to get stuck in the wound site
for DESCRIPTION OF PROCESS:
I've only ever had local pain killers / been awake for every dental procedure, and basically the process there is: put a little pain killer on your gums wherever they're going to inject the anesthetic, injecting the anesthetic, and then working on the teeth.
The injections themselves will still hurt a little, but it will feel more like someone digging their knuckle in REALLY HARD against your jawbone. (If there's no topical, or they Miss the spot they numbed, it will feel much sharper.) (misses like this are very rare but the pain is short-lived anyway)
for the actual hands-in-mouth removal process: it will suck. there's no getting around that! they will probably manhandle your skull a bit and you'll either have bite-guards inserted on the opposite-to-operation side of your mouth or you'll have to keep it open by your own power — either way, this is going to contribute to full-jaw soreness for a couple days
sensation wise it's going to feel like a lot of pressure on your teeth and gums — pressing the heel of your palm against any close-to-surface bone will give you an idea of what "pressure" means — but it's also going to be pretty noisy
depending on the state of your teeth, it is normal for ones that have been decayed to crack in the removal process — this also sometimes makes it easier to remove, so again it's mostly pressure and noise (and hands in mouth) that'll be the ordeal
it is in fact very Pressure and Noise
at the end they'll stitch up and give you gauze to pack with — you'll have to continue putting in gauze for at least a day after? this is both to absorb excess blood (unfortunately, there's blood) but also to help the wound clot without getting dislodged
you'll be instructed that the gauze needs to be damp before it goes in, bc otherwise you risk it absorbing too much moisture from your mouth. damp mouth is a healing mouth. dry mouth is not.
whenever I've had work done, i would usually get prescribed Big Painkillers (ibuprofen 800 mg horse pills my beloved) and a specially-medicated mouth wash that tastes fuck awful
and they'll always be like "oh you should wait for it to start hurting and step up with regular painkillers first" but like. that fucking sucks. if you don't have a history of pk abuse and if you keep to dosage times/quantities, you'll want to take the first one basically as soon as it's allowed and follow that pacing for at least the first two days
aftermath: your face WILL swell up and it's entirely possible for your face to bruise! this won't be from them manhandling your skull but from the whole tooth extraction itself. sometimes you get lucky and it doesn't happen, sometimes you get unlucky and you can get bruising as far up as a black eye, face inclusive.
if this happens and you don't wear masks / makeup, people will mistake it for you having gotten into a fight
normal bruise treatment applies in this case too: cold compress, try not to sleep face-down, etc
i... THINK that's most everything...
ive gotten rly lucky about not bruising and i credit it to asap cold compress
the very detailed breakdown is very very very appreciated, thank you very much
personally i have not gotten a bone graft, so i do not know how much of this process changes because of that, but this should cover at least what to expect up to that point
YEAH i know the first time i had anything Out i had soooo much mental wheel spinning over "is it supposed to be like that?????" and yeah, unfortunately
if you can, you might want to sneak in a squeezable stress toy because—at least for me i did a lot of hand clenching during the intense pressure moments.

IT WILL SUCK BUT YOU WILL GET OUT THE OTHER SIDE HAVING EXILED THE TRAITORS
but yes you're welcome!!!
not horribly painful but def unpleasant
bone graft was the most painful part but wasn't terrible, felt like pressing smth cold against a sensitive tooth/nerve
didn't end up doing the wisdom tooth after all so that's good. will consult with oral surgeon at a later date for all of them

glad this part is over!!!!
no spitting for 5 days is gonna be hard
I'm glad you got the worst part over ;;
i cried a lil bc of pressure/epi but we aight in here
glad it went ok! reasonably at least
i took my tooth home. it's GROSS
man i NEVER got to take any home... but also congrats on getting through the worst of it. now just the long of it...
i was a little insistent im like i grew that. make me a waiver if you must
they didn't make me sign anything but they were like "yeah they don't like us to do this but here ya go"
that's YOUR problem child
YOU GOT TO TAKE YOUR TOOTH HOME?????
i'm irrationally jealous, i didn't get to keep my wisdom teeth
they weren't gonna let me take it if it broke bc they like vacuum up the pieces but it came out whole so i could take it
maybe that's why, i think they break wisdom teeth to get them out?
they had to shatter my teeth and extract them in pieces bc they were impacted lol, that is quite rare to get to keep it. enjoy your gross souvenir
yeah they broke my lower two but my upper two they were able to just bloop
go back and claim what is yours by birthright
i didn't even get money from the tooth fairy for them, i had to pay the tooth fairy to take them, i'm gonna sue
good to know: opioids don't do SHIT for me
so everything that's been happening these past few weeks is:
1. sister hospitalized and serious surgical procedure
2. COVID going around at work
3. dragon boat race & prep (not bad at least but still stressful)
4. multiple ppl in household getting sick
5. multiple dentist appts culminating in tooth removal
AND. in between all the above
6. landlord said "i wanna sell my house get out by nov 1st"
SO LEGITIMATELY. FUCK AUGUST/SEPTEMBER
EGG YOUR LIFE....
i want to lay down and sleep for a week and i don't even have the vacation time for that
