There is a conversation in my future that I am not looking forward to

And that is with a customer who I am going to have to deny a sale to

Because

He has been buying multiple bottles of cooking sherry

Because those don’t require an id check, and you can buy them with food stamps

And he’s fucking blasted

It took me a few days to realize what he was doing

How did you get to this point in your life dude

You really do see people in all kinds of situations in this job

That guy was but this next guy was

Summer is ending so we’re massively marking down a bunch of summer stuff

So a guy comes up with a shopping cart that is overflowing with markdown bubble wands

these things

Goes to self checkout

Spends about 40 minutes scanning it all

Then leaves to go “get some money”

But the thing he said that haunts me

Was

“Do you think you could use this stuff to wash dishes?”

Oh bud

OH. OH NO.

I may be showing my ignorance here but I don't think bubbles work that way, my dude

I hope the first guy gets the help he needs and the second guy gets... uh, also the help he needs, I guess, which is a significantly different kind of help.

He never came back with money

He just scanned $160 worth of product at 0.80 a pop and then left us with it and a promise he’d be back in half an hour
