He played a huge role in bringing attention to the kind of mental health struggles faced by veterans, especially PTSD, and lobbied Congress extensively advocating for it. He also definitely suffered from it himself, and tremendously so.

He was also the kind of person who, even when dealing with all of that and struggling financially, never broke his rule to never accept any endorsement deals for alcohol or tobacco

not out of any opposition to it himself, but because he was very conscious of the fact the military was using him as a propaganda figure and he wanted to make sure he always set a good example for any children that might see him.

Because he was just the kind of person who genuinely placed a higher priority on setting a good example than on things like "am I going to be able to pay my bills this month"
