I know most people are excited for the fusion aspect, and the new plants, but those are relatively exclusive things, I'd guess

If we get fusions, there's no way we'll have even half of the plant variety we got in PvZ2, at least not with base plants

And it'll take a LOT longer for new plants to come out, just as a byproduct of this

And with EA at the helm, it'll cost us as players a lot more

They might do some sort of "only merge within plants of this arbitrary group system" deal

But there's no good coexistence of good fusions and good plant variety, sadly
