When am I thinking about my Romulans without pondering names. But like is making it a bit more relevant for Æn'kae right now XD

So I already knew Kivea, for all she uses her own true name, called him by a nickname growing up, it wasn't meant to be a name replacement. And in thinking about their relationship, I'd bet Skisan picked up the same nickname, And since they each used their own language I wonder if a name possibility is squishing the phrases together XD

It's basically clever little bird. (Little was partially because child, but also with context of meaning more like songbird than raptor)

Which is "Aodhh saj dhæl" in Romulan and "Klonik pi' kushel" in Vulcan

Now the vulcan one could already squish together into one word with the structure of Vulcan "Klonpikushel" is a valid word. Romulan would involve more creative squishing

May play with trying to start with Saj somehow. Something about using traditional Vulcan name structure via starting with a Romulan word XD

Æn'kae is Wing (in Romulan) Mind (in Vulcan)

I would like another word for bird I think, but like 90% of named birds in both languages are raptors XD

All for nicknames! Tho now I wonder if Days surname Wing would translate as... Aen'kae if he ever gets around to full introductions XD
WaryFalcon

formal nouns don't tend to translate and it would just be æn if it did XD

so birds! haurok is a Vulcan bird. I have no details as to what kind of bird, just that it is a type. Lara is a blue desert bird. All the other named birds are raptors.
WaryFalcon

then Romulan hlai is like...a chicken (but like ostrich sized) and nei'rrh is more like a hummingbird but uh... venomous
WaryFalcon
4 weeks ago @Edit 4 weeks ago
and once again the rest are raptors

I thoooought of using the word generator to make a name for a sparrow/robin type bird. But I have a strong suspicion a bird like that would not have evolved in either world XD (Especially not Romulus where the largest bird of prey can friggin chameleon itself)

It's a shame Day doesn't know anything about his Mongolian roots but as supportive as the gas station was, Mongolian language teaching was a good bit beyond their scope

-al is a diminutive so it could replace small. -hwy sorta indicates something's been tamed and that's both a thought and a little twitch worthy in a way. Hmm. Saj'laral?

Of course, I need to work out multiple names for him I think -facepalm- one or more for strangers, and I kinda want to work out his true name, which... I think is gonna be tricky. I think he'd also have trouble finding it, because I... kinda feel like it's More than he'd ever consider in a way? idk

Oop I mixed up which word was clever and which was small for romulan. abort abort XD

He wouldn't pick it, but I feel like it's exactly the kind of thing his friends would latch onto for him after hearing his mentors calling him clever little bird in two separate languages XD just like "baby bird, he's just a baby bird!"

Hi Nukhar, I'm looking at you in particular
WaryFalcon
4 weeks ago @Edit 4 weeks ago
Hmm. Not like most people he meets now speak Romulan or Vulcan. So just straight up being like "Yup. I'm bird" in either language wouldn't sound that strange XD and Dhæl flows well, and I love Lara when mixed with other words) I don't like the.. texture (?) of Kushel or Haurok for him, though they both would work as names for other chars I think.

Alright. Time to open my Rihan spreadsheet and just look for words that vibe and see if I can find one that also have a meaning that vibes XD

Avhil is Earth (like the Element, not dirt/the planet, which for elemental association is prolly my strongest for him, though water is also very high, Ihhuein) Laravhil kinda has a fun flow to it, though I'm not sure if it suits him or not

Okay. Why do I kinda like S'Ourai
WaryFalcon
Like the meaning is on the nose. But It rolls off the tongue and kinda has the right sound texture for him? But oh gosh (From fire. I mean Symbolic significance of going through forge yada yada. But also like that fire word is specifically for plasma fire -eyes the plasma radiation burn scars-)

Like I love the S' having some of the older Vulcan naming conventions (S'Harien who made the swords the Romulans revere and Vulcans love if they can get any, he just destroyed most of them, and S'Task who led the first of the Romulans as they left Vulcan) Anyway. True name maybe? It's certainly not the sort of thing he'd come on for himself but like
WaryFalcon
IDK, the significance of him being a Romulan/Vulcan and firmly believing in reunification (while keeping both cultures) as the best way forward for both? And getting the naming convention from the days of the sundering? I just like it

Why plasma fire? I was browsing words that could work with S' or Svi' (the second means between) and the romulan word jumped out at me and then I looked over and saw it was plasma fire and groaned. I checked all the other words for fire and none flowed as well though the Element word (Okhala so S'Okhala) isn't baaad, it also isn't him XD

In conclusion (All still somewhat speculative)
Name for family/friends: Aodhh Laral
Nickname/Name for strangers: Dhæl
Name for the Government: Æn'Kae (Have a growing feeling this will someday morph into not just his, but Skisan and Kivea's family name if I can ever get those two talking like the adults they are again -grumble-)
True/hidden name: S'Ourai

Don't have a locative for his formal name. It will prolly be whatever name the town on New Romulus ends up called but placeholder we'll just use Mol Rihan for now so "Dhæl i'Mol Rihan Æn'kae" would be formal name (Friends would skip all of that and just use Aodhh Laral, or prolly just Laral for short)

I mean, right now he has some of those names the trick is getting him to think of them as names vs "term of endearment used in childhood" XD
WaryFalcon
4 weeks ago @Edit 4 weeks ago
I love Romulan names though, like. The more public facing names are the most fluid. The name for strangers? Can change on a whim. Location changes based on what you feel is most accurate. It can be your birth town, or where you put down roots. Or.. >.> And family name like, any adult can adopt another adult into their family so long as the matriarch approves

But the name they share with almost no one. Yes they have to find it out, but it also doesn't really ever change once they do. The name for family and friends can change too, but it's not terribly common that it does.

This to say, I think Æn'kae may just kind of toss out Dhæl as something to call him, but I'm not so sure it will stick. I think Aodhh Laral will though (S'Ourai he has to find first XD He's nowhere near it)

reminds me of Elfquest, where most of the non-true blood elves have a usename (that may change through life + nicknames) and a Soulname (may or may not be known to themselves / need finding) that shows their "true self". using it might even grant power over them, if the other is a capable mind mage

I still laugh about Khell. Because Khell (shortened from hunter) was just a throwaway name that she ended up meeting a bunch of people under kinda rapid-fire. But what she doesn't know is her hidden name is Khelh (to safeguard) and I die every time I think about how much that's gonna freak her out.

like "Wait... no. I need a new one. Too many people know me as this. No." Rren in my head trying to be sympathetic and not laugh at her. Just dead-pan like "No take-backs"
