HMMM. gives u a challenging(?) one. 15 for flowey
but also 8
"what i dont like about the way canon portrayed them"
it's hard for me to come up with criticisms for Undertale because it really is so well-written. with that said...
... at the end of the game, i think asriel kind of distances himself from flowey and almost makes it sound like they're different people. "when i turn back [into flowey], just know that isnt really me". and like. yes, he is going to lack a soul again, and thats a big thing. a big reason he did all that is because he couldnt feel anything about anyone.
but also, there's a lot of ways flowey acts that are very specifically reacting to trauma he underwent. his signature "its kill or be killed" mindset is referencing the circumstances in which he died.
i understand that asriel wants to distance himself from it all. and he doesnt completely separate himself from flowey; "i did a lot of weird stuff as a flower", and other lines connect them.
but i feel like it lent itself really well to interpretations of "flowey and asriel are literally different people" and "saving asriel" type AUs, i think.
the latter was extremely popular circa late 2015-2016 and i saw people criticize toby fox for not giving asriel a happy ending. and i feel like its missing the point, you know? some things cant be undone. flowey, at his core, is a mirror for the player.
just like you have to let the undertale cast go, so does he. why should he go with them after spending lifetimes treating them like toys that he can break as he pleases?
i think some people might be confused why i write flowey with a strong sense of self-loathing. i mean, the obvious part of it is that he hates being a flower (seed, now). he hates being soulless. and originally, he very clearly felt like he failed chara and let them both die.
but i really think that asriel in that moment saw flowey as like, a personification of his trauma and pain, all of the 'bad parts' of him. and then he turned back into it.
the game itself is sparse on details of flowey's past resets besides the fact that he did everything. solved everyone's problems, killed everyone, and so on.
but i feel strongly like- just like how the fandom wants asriel back with all the "saving asriel" AUs, others would want him to act more like asriel as well.
toriel and asgore are both good at pretending nothings wrong. i think they would love flowey and try to care for him and treat him gently if they know what he went through, but flowey would find it odd that they're just acting like nothing happened. especially since chara is still gone.
and he would get the feeling that they look at him and see asriel, but worse. you know?
i think the truest ending FOR ME would be flowey eventually going to live on the surface, but going to explore it and just entertain himself and experience new things. but sometimes hanging out with frisk and maybe papyrus too.
eventually he might come to terms with his past as asriel again from the other side. and i dont think his identity as 'flowey' is exactly great as a fresh start since it is so heavily tied to his trauma and warped view of himself/the world. but he has to come around to it on his own time
and i think being around everyone on the surface (especially in a flower pot, with his movement restricted) might hinder that.
this became a rant about fandom more than canon. to get back to the point
i think toby did want to sort of tie things up and let you see asriel off on a bittersweet note, though slightly more sweet. he's smiling. he tells you to take care of everyone. etc. he wants you to forget him.
i'm not sure how exactly i'd change it. i dont want to be like "undertale has to have a realistic depiction of a panic attack".
and i think people will misinterpret things no matter what. i mean, people thought chara was an evil demon with no redeeming qualities for like. years. unfortunately.
i guess i just wish it was a little different! i dont know!
maybe i'm just stupid though. lol
"something about them that made me laugh"
its a very shocking and cool moment that subverts all your expectations but i think we have to admit the flowey tutorial sequence is funny as fuck
youre listening to that little plucky chiptune beat and he wants to share love with you and youre like yaaay! and then you go to 1 HP and the cute little flower looks at you like this
reads this with interest and nods very seriously...
AND YEAH. OBJECTIVELY FUNNY AND O
*OBJECTIVELY EVEN FUNNIER ONCE YOU KNOW HE'S LIKE 12
11 for noelle, 10 for flowey!
"11. my favorite relationship they have with another character"
honestly........................................................................................................ i think my favorite ship is still suselle. but i think the relationship between noelle and kris with all the history and unspoken pain and stuff is really interesting!
especially seeing it turned around in the weird route. im very curious to see where it will go
"my favorite moment with them in canon"
HOW DO I PICK JUST ONE... flowey's actual appearances on-screen are all just bangers
i think..........................
there's nothing more iconic than the horror of the omega flowey reveal. the fact that he's in a completely different art style really sells the eldritch abomination vibe. the fact that it feels completely unwinnable. the fact that he hijacks the game over menu and kicks you out of the game. iconic
love a good game breaking moment
