Getting sent to the Den of Woe, watching all your comrades kill each other, barely making it out alive, getting marked for death by your church that everyone in the world lives for except for a select few "heretics"
and then Nooj shoots you, so you're not in hiding with your friends anymore but completely alone, the church is still out to get you, and you're still 16
It adds a whole nother layer of like... poignancy, to the little bit of dialogue where Paine admits that she joined everyone singing the Hymn of the Fayth at the end of FFX
